Sony Launches $134 Million Marketing Campaign for PS3

Posted by MJK On August - 26 - 2009

Sony Computer Entertainment Europe has launched $134 million marketing campaign for their new version of PlayStation 3 titled PS3 Slim. The new campaign is set for the upcoming Christmas season to rival Xbox360 and Nintendo Wii. Even Sony has decided to part ways with its previous style of ads and the new ads are more straight forward and bright that focus on the capabilities of the PS3 instead of games only.

According to GamaSutra:

The TV portion of the campaign is breaking away from the abstract nature of earlier PS3 ads in Europe, instead going for a more straightforward, bright approach that explains the game console’s home entertainment capabilities, according to a report in the Guaurdian. The TBWA agency handled the TV ads, which debut this evening.

It will be the first major PS3 ad campaign in Europe since Sony launched the original PS3 two years ago, the report said.

“Two years after launch, PlayStation 3 is realizing its full potential. The console is moving beyond gaming and gaming is moving beyond discs,” said Alan Duncan, UK marketing director for SCEE.

The new ad campaign comes a week after Sony announced a redesigned PlayStation 3 that is both cheaper for customers, and cheaper for Sony to build. The new console dropped to £250 ($408) from £299 ($488) in the UK, where SCEE is committing £6 million ($9.8 million) towards marketing.

According to Guardian story, the forecasts for gaming industry as as following:

SCEE is desperate to win the Christmas sales battles against Nintendo and Microsoft this year. The campaign comes on the heels of a price-cut announcement at the European games trade show Gamescom.

Screen Digest has forecast that Sony will sell 4.3m PS3 consoles in Europe this year and a total of 11.16m across the lifetime of the product to date.

Nintendo’s Wii will sell 7.5m consoles in Europe this year, bringing its total sales to date for the region to more than 21m, according to Screen Digest. Microsoft’s Xbox 360 will hit just below 3m this year, a total to date of just under 11m across Europe since the console went on sale.

Google Maps to Show Traffic Conditions on BackRoads

Posted by MJK On August - 25 - 2009

Google Maps keeps adding new things to its world class mapping software “Google Maps”. I never imagined that Google will integrate so many things into it that it will eventually become the world best detailed map. It has added so many features that it is hard to count them.

Today, Google has announced on its site an addition of a new feature i.e Traffic conditions on the back roads. Back Roads are generally the alternative roads which you can take to avoid the highways. Since highways tend to get the major chunk of the traffic, you can take the back roads to avoid it. Google will aid you in this by providing you with the traffic situation on those back roads.  This software can really come handy since its available on the mobile version of Google Maps.

googlemaps

The 100 million dollars question is that how Google collect this data? It seems Google has shared a bit of the answer to this questions as i found out on a blog post by Leena Rao on TechCrunch. Below is what she added:

Google says that this feature can also be accessed on Google Maps for Mobile, which is particularly useful when trying to figure out the best route on the go. Google also shed a little bit of light as to how they crowdsource traffic info via Google Maps on mobile phones. When you enable Google Maps with My Location, the phone sends anonymous bits of data back to Google describing how fast you’re moving. When Google combines your speed with the speed of other phones on the road, across thousands of phones moving around a city at any given time, they can get an idea of traffic live conditions. They continuously combine this data and send it back to you for free in the Google Maps traffic layers.

Google assures users that they only use anonymous speed and location information to calculate traffic conditions, and only do so when the user has opted to enable location services on his or her phone.

International students or Foreign students as they are known, are no more interested in US universities, as revealed by a recent survey. According to the survey, 3% decrease has been witnessed in students coming to the US universities.

According to Business Week,

The 3% average decline is the first in five years and would have been far worse if not for increases in China and the Middle East. Educators are now worried about foreign student enrollment this fall and diversity in graduate programs in years to come. Depending on how many accepted students actually show up on campus in coming weeks, international enrollments could stay level or plunge. “The declines this year were steeper than I expected,” says Nathan Bell, the author of the report and the council’s director of research and policy analysis. “It is very unlikely that we will see any increase at all in first-time enrollment of international students this fall, and that will be a shift from what we’ve seen.”

Though the report found a 4% increase in international applications, the total number of international applications received this year is still below 2003 application levels at many of the 253 schools that responded to the survey.

The findings come a time when international students are increasingly getting cold feet about coming to study in U.S. graduate schools. Many are worried about their job prospects and the daunting challenges associated with obtaining an H-1B visa to work in the U.S. after graduation. A number have had trouble securing financing to study in the U.S., a problem exacerbated this year when many graduate schools lost the contracts for the co-signer loan programs on which many international students had depended, and had to scramble to find replacements

The TechCrunch, a famous technology blog also terms it an alarming situation and call it a result of Xenophobic behavior shown by American officials towards the people from developing world. That is one reason evident from the huge decrease in number of applicants from India and South Korea.

Sarah Lacy is particularly concerned about the impact of this latest trend on the future of Silicon Valley and says the following in her blog post:

It’s happening: Lou Dobbs’ dream come true and Silicon Valley’s worst nightmare. We’re already seeing the reverse brain drain as smart immigrants take their US educations and experience building companies and creating technology back to their home countries. But now, xenophobia and the lack of any sensible H-1B visa policy is keeping the world’s brightest minds from coming to the U.S. in the first place.

She further ads the following in her concluding remarks,

You know that American dream and American spirit of innovation we always talk about? Turns out, the bulk of it was built by people who came to America from somewhere else, not people born American. We have no birthright or natural lock on these things. Money and talent are fungible assets that flowed to the U.S.—and specifically the Valley—because that is where they were supported and rewarded.

Some people have blithely dismissed growth in markets like China and India saying Silicon Valley will always be the hub for tech; that everyone will come to us. Wake up: Because the numbers are showing money and talent is increasingly going elsewhere.

Indeed, very well said Sarah, we all agree that America has traditionally benefited from its policies of welcoming merit and not color, religion and race but alas that is no more the case and its impact will soon be evident.

Modern Warfare 2 Public Beta: Rumors Clarified

Posted by Mr. Waltz On August - 23 - 2009

I am obviously waiting for the MW2 beta , and there is lots and lots of weird news on the internet, like there won’t be any beta. Digging in hard, i found an official word on the status of the Public beta on the Infinity ward forum; so listen to this – they are still working on testing the beta internally and after that stage , they would love to release the public beta;

I wanted to clarify the supposed “news” coming out of GameCom this morning regarding no MW2 Beta.

First, nothing has technically changed by this news. As I’ve told you many times in the past, expect no Public Beta unless we announce otherwise. That is still the case. We would never say something as definitive as “No Beta Ever!” as that’s simply not how we work. We’ll do an internal beta, if we feel a public one is needed, we’ll explore that route as well.

It is true that we have not announced a Public Beta for MW2, and that remains true unless I announce otherwise.

However, while no Public Beta is currently announced we do plan on running an extensive Closed Beta among Infinity Ward, Activision, and possibly 1st party partners worldwide. The internal beta will allow us all the benefits of a public beta test without the impact it takes on the time required to prep, distribute, & manage a public beta during this crucial time in development.

Remember, Multiplayer has been in development since Day 1 of working on Modern Warfare 2, and this is the essential run up to launch when we’re playing everyday, hammering away on it to make sure it’s as polished as can be by launch. As always, our internal QA team has daily multiplayer tests in addition to company-wide nightly MP tests we hold from the moment MP is in a running state throughout development.

Once the internal beta is completed, if for any reason we feel we didn’t receive the feedback, address the issues, or have the result we expect. We would consider pushing forward with a public one, however at this point only an internal Closed Beta is planned.

That said, any fears that no Public Beta will result in any quality loss in the final multiplayer game is completely unfounded; Multiplayer has always been and will always remain a major focus for the team at Infinity Ward and we would never ship a product we didn’t feel lived up to the high standards we hold ourselves to.

While we love public betas for all the obvious reasons, an internal Closed Beta allows us the extra freedom and flexibility to give the entire multiplayer a chance to be widely beta tested without requiring excess development time simply to prep the game for public release instead of an internal beta test which is ran on dev kits / test kits. That fact alone, allows us to have a smoother and faster process of iteration when addressing issues and pushing fixes out to beta participants.

This decision allows us to deliver a more polished experience, which in the end, is what we all want.

Stay informed on Multiplayer

We’ll be filming plenty of Multiplayer videos for you to get a glimpse of new perks, features, killstreak rewards, and other additions you can look forward to in Modern Warfare 2’s Multiplayer. Keep an eye on our Twitter feed (@fourzerotwo) for when we post new videos and subscribe to the Official Infinity Ward YouTube channel.

In addition to the official multiplayer videos and features we release, we’ll be doing more and more multiplayer press from now until launch so you can get your fill of intel before jumping online day 1.

Now you can download torrents on your iPhone or iPod touch through the Torrentula app by Sunburst.  The app is only available through Cydia so therefore you have to jail break your iPhone or iPod Touch and don’t worry jailbreak is now so common that no iPhone user can live without it. You can found Torrentula on Cydia under BigBoss and PlanetiPhones repository in the Utilities Section. Do note that Torrentula requires newest Jiggy Runtime.  How to install Jiggy Runtime and Torrentula, Sunburst says the following:

If you haven’t downloaded and installed Jiggy yet, then you need to do so and you can check out how here. Once you have it installed, just add the source http://itouch.rockt.es/repo.xml to your iPhone Installer.

Once installed, just follow these steps outlined below, courtesy of sunburst:

Download .torrent files to your device with the HistoryDL.app (recommended) or the Safari Download Plugin into the mobile (or root)/Downloads folder. The program will scan your mobile (or root)/Downloads folder for new torrent files, and will import any valid torrent files regardless of their filename or extension. When a torrent has finished downloading from peers it will be automatically moved to mobile (or root)/Media/Downloads when selected. Note: Torrents continue downloading even when program is closed. A device restart can often activate/fix stubborn torrents.

The Torrentula app lets you search torrents from the best torrents site on the net like Mininova and Demonoid from its built in web browser. The app will keep downloading the torrents while staying in the background even if its not opened. There is also a negative side to it in case you forgot to put a hold on the download of a big redundant file. So do cancel the torrents that you want to stop downloading. Simply closing the app will not result in stopping the download process.

I am sure you all are aware of the strange sounds that come out from your speakers if you place your cell phone near to it. I find them very distracting since i mostly place my cell phone next to the car stereo system and hence i have to hear the annoying buzz that comes out of the car.

However, now you don’t need to worry about it as i just came across a simple technique to get rid of that sound. I would like to share it with our readers so that they can also lessen their problem.   According to IM;

Why not just use an everyday anti-static bag? Also known as electrostatic bags, anti-static bags are those shiny metallic-coated bags that your graphics cards, RAM sticks and hard drives come packaged in. You’ve probably thrown away more of these electrostatic bags than you know. But, you probably didn’t know that anti-static bag could finally eliminate that speaker buzz!

Simply sitting your mobile phone in top of an anti-static bag will squash all magnetic interference. The next time your speakers start buzzing because your homies are blowin’ up the cellie, just find that shiny silver bag and place it over the cellphone.

Below is the video demonstration of it.

10+ ways you can Twitter on S60 devices

Posted by mansoor.ehsan On August - 15 - 2009

Having a Symbian phone and looking for some twitter client? Here, I have tried to put all the popular available twitter clients for s60 devices. I remember when i required one twitter client for my symbian phone, i did lots of googling to find a good client. Since i tried almost all of them so i thought to put a blogpost.

Currently there are some good apps dedicated purely for twitter, then there are apps that include twitter as a widget or as an additional feature. Apart from installing native twitter apps you can also log on to web services that offer tweeting. So here you go with all the details:

TWITTER APPLICATIONS FOR S60: (The order below does not show any preference for being best)

1. Gravity:

Gravity is a popular native Twitter client for the S60 platform with support for S60v3 and S60v5. It has everything that you can imagine and see in a desktop client like twitter search, trending topics, support for multiple accounts, Laconica, Ping.fm, posting of your images via MobyPicture & TwitPic and on top of everything it has a clean looking interface and comes with two themes.

The newer version also provides support for facebook where you can ‘like’ or ‘comment’ on news feeds and statuses coming from friends. The best thing is uploading your images right from your media gallery to TwitPic. So any time you an action going around that can become a hot story, just take a snap and TwitPic it creating waves right from your twitter.

All in all, Gravity gives you all twitter functions including tweet, reply, retweet, DM, follow & unfollow, block, create favourites, search, auto-update and with many other great features. Gravity is not free but you can try a 10 day demo (with all features) for free. You can download and see more details here.

2. Twittix:

Twittix is another mobile resident Twitter client for S60 by Mojos Mobile. Twittix is more simpler as compared to Gravity but has more or less same functionality. It supports Symbian S60v3 and v5 so you have all N and E series phones covered. It provides all twitter functions like Tweet, Reply, Direct Message, ReTweet, Follow and Unfollow. Since tabbed view has become a trademark of all twitter apps, therefore it is also followed by our friends at Mojos Studios.  It also provides support for multiple accounts and image uploading like Gravity. The application comes with support for English and German languages.

This app also supports portrait and landscape modes so you can have a bit of ease with more horizontal space when you are in landscape mode. Twittix is not free and costs 4.95 EUR. You can see more details and download the trial version here

3. Tweets60:

A relatively simpler app that comes free of cost. Same like above two it also supports S60v3 and v5. It offers basic tweeting features like Tweet, Reply, Direct Message, ReTweet and Follow. It does not provides support for multiple accounts neither gives the search functionality. We can understand that since its a free client, it can not offer everything thus image uploading is not supported. But being free does not mean that you’ll be kept deprived of basic yet important features like opening links from within the tweets.

You can download the free version of TweetS60 here.

4. Iamdoing:

This Twitter client for S60 phones is free for use. Even though it is still in alpha stage but i have faith that it will come good in future and may turn out to be a most popular choice. The most interesting thing is an auto support for generating tiny URLs. Yes, put any URL and it will be converted using http://is.gd service which i did not find even in Gravity. I mean the interesting thing is that you can not expect such things in a FREE client! So be more surprised that it also gives support for splitting a long message into several 140 char messages, adding “…” and using the proper order for presenting the pieces ;-)

Obviously it offers all basic tweeting functions. You can download this light piece of software here.

5. Fring

Fring basically being an IM client has added support for twitter with its latest add-on. Its twitter functionality lets you perform basic twitter functions. You can view others’ profiles, check-out your followers and see who’s following you. It also provides searching for keywords or hashtags used by tweeple.

Like other clients above, you have the option here in Fring to open tinyURLs from all incoming tweets. Currently it does not offer uploading images or have multiple accounts but since it is free and provides all basic features with a value add of IMs, i would always like to have it in my symbian phone.

You can download and seek more info on Twitter add-on for Fring at this link.

6. Twibble mobile

Twibble is a free Twitter utility for Java enabled smartphones. You have access to all features like tweet, retweet, follow and unfollow, send reply, DM, open a link, mark a tweet as favorite, search users or hashtags from within the tweets, image browser to select and tweet images through twitpic and mobypicture, auto-connect to fetch latest tweets, configure it for notifications so it tells you when you have a tweet, and and and… have i missed anything?

This is all feature rich free java app for twitter and comes neat with couple of themes and looks even cool with full screen functionality. Even though it does not offer using multiple accounts but still has lot to offer. If you’re not in mood to spend bucks and can compromise on multiple accounts then this should be your real choice.

You can download and see full feature list at this link.

7. Snaptu

I downloaded Snaptu to keep myself updated with cricket scores from the mighty cricinfo. After installation i found out there was much more to offer from Snaptu including Twittwer. Even though it is a discussion of twitter clients but still i would like to mention that it offers some good and fun selection of fun apps like twitter, facebook, picassa, google calander, accuweather updates, cricinfo scors, rss readers and much much more. A must have app!

Coming to its twitter functionality, its not that fancy and you can perform only basic features like tweet, re-tweet, reply, open links and follow/unfollow a user.

Find info on download and features at this link.

8. Twim

Twim is a mobile twitter client developed by Tommi Laukkanen. It is a java application and runs on Java MIDP 2.0 profile phones. You should not expect this free app to have a catchy interface as Gravity or other paid apps but it still has good features. You can tweet, reply, retweet, mark a tweet as favorite, send direct message, open link in phone browser, search for tweets and upload image through twitpic (and more). Inclusion of Mobypicture service means you can also share videos.

It does not offer multiple accounts, configureable notifications and auto refresh to fetch new tweets. You can download this light twitter client here.

9. Jibjib

Jibjib is a simple and free J2ME client for twitter. This open source java build requires CLDC 1.0 and MIDP 1.0 to run on your phones. It is all a basic twitter application and does not have very much to offer but since it is out there, i have just mentioned it as “another twitter client” :p

web based:

10. m.slandr.net:

m.slandr.net is mobile web app where you can use twitter in an easy way. After you log in, you see the time line. All the basic functions are there with tweet, re-tweet, mentions (all replies mentioning you with @), direct messages and search. You can view a user profile and then follow or unfollow him/her. Its ‘Geo’ function saves your location and takes it as reference for its ‘Local’ function where it shows all the tweets coming in within 5 miles of your location. This whole function makes it real interesting.

Its Search also has versatility where you can not only search for a given term find tweets from a user using “from:quotations”, find tweets to a user using “to:technama”, find tweets referencing a user: “@technama”, find tweets containing a hashtag: “#technology” and also find tweets with an attitude like :) or :p. This kind of search is no exception but having it in a free web app means something good!

You can access it here from your mobile or i would suggest it works even better than twitter on web: m.slandr.net

11. dabr.co.uk

Dabr is an open source mobile web interface to Twitter’s API similar to slandr.net. Loaded with all features, it makes your life easier if you have not installed any app and still use twitter. You can reply to any tweet, mark it as favorite, re-tweet it or send a direct message to tweeple of that tweet. You can see replies mentioning you, see DMs for you, make a search, browse favorite tweets, browse friends or followers and then follow/unfollow and block/unblock them.

Interestingly it also offers twitpicing your images from your media gallery. So thumbs up adding this feature.

12. m.twitter.com

Similar to its web version, the mobile is no good too. You can only send your updates or follow a user, open links, view replies where you have been mentioned with @.

###

I am sure there would be many more out there…if you’re using a different way to tweet from s60 then do write for us and our readers in the comments area. I will also make a comparative chart comparing all of above but i will do that after a break :P .

A side note is that you can follow technama on twitter as well: @technama which pulls all the latest blog posts. Apart from that my personal account on twitter is @rmansoo

Top 20 Electronic Games List for July 2009

Posted by MJK On August - 14 - 2009

The top 20 gaming list for july, 2009 has been released by NPD and i just came across it so thought to share it with our readers. The interesting thing about the list is that EA and Nintendo games got the maximum hits.  According to Gamasutra:

As previously revealed, Nintendo and Electronic Arts dominated the top 10 with six and four titles, respectively, and that strength continued throughout the expanded list.

On the Wii, Nintendo’s mini-game and peripheral combo, Wii Play, took the #11 spot and its update to the classic boxing game, Punch-Out!!, claimed #15. EA’s Tiger Woods PGA Tour 10 for the Wii ranked 12th when sales of the standalone game and Wii MotionPlus bundle were combined.

In addition, Nintendo’s The Legendary Starfy for the DS returned to the chart for a second month in precisely the same slot, #19.

Two more EA titles made the list: Fight Night Round 4 for Sony’s PlayStation 3 at 13th and NCAA Football 10 for the PlayStation 2 at 20th, the ninth iteration of that series on Sony’s older console.

Other than EA and Nintendo, the publishers THQ, Activision Blizzard, and Take-Two Interactive filled out the remainder of the top 20 list.

Elsehwere, THQ’s hit brawler, UFC 2009: Undisputed for the Xbox 360, made the top 20 for its third consecutive month, this time at position 14.

Activision Blizzard’s movie-tie in game, Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen – Autobots, slipped in at #16 while Prototype for the Xbox 360 dropped from the #1 spot in June to #17 in July. Finally, Take-Two’s baseball sim Major League Baesball 2K9 (also for the Xbox 360) finished the month at 18th.

Nintendo platforms dominated with 12 titles in the top 20. Five titles on the chart were for Microsoft’s Xbox 360. Sony’s PlayStation 2 and PlayStation 3 each claimed 1 and 2 titles respectively.

The detail list is below:
