Download Boxee Alpha for Windows

by MJK on June 25, 2009

Boxee is a truly amazing media center app to fulfill all your needs. Boxee has earlier been released in private alpha edition for Mac and Ubuntu but now Boxee has formally released public alpha for Windows as well. Boxee is open source and provide one stop solution to all your media needs. Once installed, it scans your hard disk and index all the available media content in its interactive platform. Not only the media available on your hard disk, it also provides a wide variety of media items from the internet to its users.

Boxee has been defined in the following words by their official website:

Boxee is a free, open-source software platform that integrates personal media with Internet media along with social networking. boxee’s social networking component allows users to share information about what they’re listening to or watching with other Boxee users or friends on social networks like twitter, facebook, etc.
Boxee is designed for your TV and use of a remote control. To get Boxee on your TV you’ll need to first connect your computer to the TV screen. You will most likely need an DVI/VGA to HDMI cable (but it depends on the specific input/output on your computer and TV).
Boxee is based on the Award winning open-source project XBMC, and also incorporates the XUL framework (which is the basis for the Mozilla browser).

I won’t go into the details of what Boxee is capable of since the below embedded video provides all the details and our readers can easily learn the  amazing features of this apps from it.

However, the public Alpha version has some limitation as of date. The Boxee team is encouraging the feedback from the users so that they can improve the application accordingly. Below are some of the limitations as found out by PC Mag team in their hands on of Boxee.

As much as I liked its smooth design, I found Boxee’s interface annoyingly difficult to navigate on my PC. After I clicked into a video (“Stand” by Rascal Flatts), it took me a few minutes to realize that I needed keyboard shortcuts to get back to the main screen–or to cycle through the main menu again.

Video playback is the main event on Boxee, but it wasn’t as stellar as I had expected. Playing videos seemed to bog down the system; when I moved the mouse, the video would pause or stutter. Likewise, trying to play video in the background while searching for more apps caused the entire platform to run slower. Of course, if you contented yourself with using Boxee as a TV replacement, the multitasking issues would vanish

To download Boxee, you have to first sign up. Click here to sign up and  downloaded Boxee Alpha. Do give it a try and let us know of your feedback. Do you think it will take over as the future of  tv?

it could have been really good if they also added live streaming TV and radio channels…doing a deal with channelchooser.com will not be bad

Live streaming option is very much available in it. Check the embedded video for details. Moreover, its open source and it allows other apps to be loaded into it so you can let you stream tv channels in a customized manner
