Chinese based Huawei telecom has crossed Alcatel Lucent to become No. 3 vendor for telecom equipment worldwide, according to Dell’Oro’s first quarter rankings. . Swedish vendor Ericsson has slightly increased its market share and maintained its position as market leaders in the telecom equipment market with a total market share of 33%. The second vendor Nokia Siemens Network (NSN) market share witnessed a slight drop from 24% to 21% of the global telecom gear.
However, Huawei witnessed a double growth in this recession hit market. Its growth has been termed remarkable by industry analysts. Huawei total market share reached to 15% while the market share of Alcatel-Lucent dropped from 16% to 14%. The irony is that vendors like Alcatel-Lucent and Nokia Siemens are not seeing a very bright future and they forecast a shrinking market in the next few years.
On the other side, Huawei proved to be the market saviour with its massive 3G contracts, which kept the market from an even steeper decline. “Intense price competition among vendors vying for share of the Chinese 3G tenders resulted in very steep price erosion, particularly in CDMA,” said Dell’Oro analyst Scott Siegler.
