A good news for Droid lovers is that hackers have successfully rooted Motorola’s Droid , so now users can install apps or services by 3rd parties of their choice outside the set menu by the operators. This new hack works on Android 2.0 and the recently released Android 2.0.1 OTA software update. Root access means you can change the phone’s firmware to in order to have your own themes, apps and custom Roms just like you do on the jailbroken iPhone. So in other words its jailbreak for droid!
How to root Motorola Droid 2.0.1
You can follow the simple guide below to root your Droid phone without worrying about making it a brick. It works on both Android 2.0 and 2.0.1 update:
1 IT IS RECOMMENDED that you first update to the latest Android 2.0.1 OTA software update.
2: Download the file (ROM OTA) for Android 2.0.1 for Motorola Droid posted in the forum discussion at alldroid (its a zip file).
3: Now rename this downloaded .zip file to update.zip
4: Next, transfer this file to the SD Card on your phone. You should move it root folder of SD card and not in any other folder
5: Power off your DROID phone. Power it back while holding the X key.
6: When you see a “/!\” symbol, press both vol+ and camera togather
7: Now simply follow the onscreen menu to install update.zip file.
8: Reboot your Droid phone and that’s it! You should now be able to run “su” from your adb shell.
