Pakistani students are all set to participate in the Shell Eco-Marathon, at Euro Speed-way Lausitz track in Germany from 7th to 9th May 2009. The purpose of the event is to promote eco-friendly cars and new designs which could shape up the future Auto-industry. As such the participants of the event have to build an urban-vehicle concept, which are designed for everyday use by consumers. Teams from GIKI (Ghulam Ishaq Khan Institute) & NUST (National University of Science & Technology )would be participating in the Event. There will be a total of 196 other team.
This is an unusual event, since Pakistan has never been known for expertise in the field of automobiles and on top of that, eco-friendly automobiles. But 4 teams from Pakistan two each from GIKI and NUST are out to prove this perception wrong. Following is one of the proto-type cars designed by the GIKI team;

The cars designed by the GIKI team can reach approximately 100km/litre, and 350km/Litre. It is also worthy to mention here that the record these teams will be competing to break is 3,410Km/Liter set by a French team in 2004, but the morale of these experts are still high.
‘Our purpose is not to break the record, but to show the world that we too in Pakistan can make something brilliant. Even if we don’t win this time, we will get a chance to learn from other foreign teams. This way, we can improve our design and compete better in the next races.’ said one of the Giki team members.
What are team competing for?
Driving 3000 kilometres per litre seems an unlikely distance, but that is the standard of fuel economy that the teams competing in the Shell Eco-marathon project will be trying to match.
Whats the purpose?
- challenges students around the world to design, build, and test vehicles that travel further using less energy.
- is an educational platform that encourages innovation, reinforces conservation and fosters the development of leading technology for greater energy efficiency.
How it all Started?
The Shell Eco-marathon began in 1939 at a Shell research laboratory in the U.S. as a friendly wager between scientists to see who could get the most miles per gallon from their vehicles. From these humble origins, the organized competition for fuel economy evolved and moved to Europe. The Shell Eco-marathon in its current form began in 1985 in France, attracting thousands of young engineers and scientists from 20 European countries. The Shell Eco-marathon Americas was first held at the California Speedway in 2007.
Technama team wishes all the participants , best of luck and ‘god speed’.
