We have come a long way since we started blogging. I remember, I used to use IE but then shifted to Mozilla Firefox thinking that there was lots of flexibility (in terms of addons), quickness and later on most importantly the portability of profiles. The openness of firefox gave developers a vast platform to develop anything they wanted giving customization its height.
Today there are thousands and thousands of addons available at Add-on library for firefox. As blogging grew developers also made extensions that proved helpful for bloggers. Here we will have a look at 5 must have add-ons for firefox that help some or the other way in blogging:
1. Firebug:
Firebug integrates with Firefox to put a wealth of development tools at your fingertips while you browse. You can edit, debug, and monitor CSS, HTML, and JavaScript live in any web page…You would be wondering why I am mentioning it for a blogger when it is meant for developers! Indeed as a standalone blogger you need to know BASICS of HTML, CSS, scripts and all the other things that are hidden behind what you see in front on a web page. To reverse engineer learn and then implement various scripts, HTML and CSS codes from other sources (on one’s own blog) is what a solo blogger is always doing and I tell you this Firebug is amazingly helpful in this regard. BTW an extra information is that it has 213,595 weekly downloads at the point when I am writing this. Hey is it that famous??
2. SEO for Firefox:
We also know that if you’re a solo blogger then you are also the webmaster of your blog. SEO for Firefox is one of the best tools for webmasters and so it can be useful for you too. SEO for Firefox pulls in many useful marketing data points to make it easy getting a holistic view of the competitive landscape of a market directly in the search results. Ahhh…was that difficult to grasp?? Simply, it gives you options to view useful data of your competitors (blogs) with in the search results of any keyword.
The data that it fetches includes PR, Age (indexing age of that page), Links (pointing at a domain), .edu Links, .gov Links, Page Links, del.icio.us (if somebody saved you there at delicious), Technorati, Alexa rank, Cached (pages indexed in Google), dmoz listing, Bloglines (subscriptions via Bloglines), listed on dir.yahoo.com or not and WhoIs data. So it can always be helpful for you in order to get your competitor’s info.
3. Dictionary Tooltip:
I believe as a solo blogger you have to do a lots of research reading all the stuff that goes online and is circulating hot. While reading you may come across a word that is difficult or you may need its synonym. One way for you could be to open a new tab/window and google its definition. I tell you the easier way: Dictionary Tooltip.
This extension is ideal for those who doesn’t like to switch their window to see the meaning of a word. Simply select a word and double click over selection. DT icon will appear, take your mouse over it and it will bring you the definition (from thefreedictionary.com) in a kind of tooltip/iframe. So to be a good blogger you have to read a lot and to understand it full you would need dictionary at some point in time and this add-on come in handy whenever you need to look definition.
4. ColorZilla:
You always need to be perfect when it comes to matching colors of your sidebars and coming up with carefully selected Adsense color palette. For that you always query Photoshop and copy the color code (i used to do that
) But the easier and convenient way is via ColorZilla.
With ColorZilla you can get a color reading from any point in your browser, quickly adjust this color and paste it into another program. You can Zoom the page you are viewing and measure distances between any two points on the page. The built-in palette browser allows choosing colors from pre-defined color sets and saving the most used colors in custom palettes and there is much more.
5. MeasureIt:
I always felt the need to put pictures in my blogposts near adsense boxes (as i always put adsense square box in my post) but I always used to experiment with dimension to come up with a perfect picture which would equivalently adjust adjacent to such advert boxes. That always takes a lot of time to experiment with your dimensions since you don’t have the exact figure. With MeasureIt you can precisely measure any part of the space on your browser. So always draw out a ruler (of MeasureIt) to get the pixel width and height of any elements on a web page without switching into Photoshop and yeah this will do it quickly for you.
