Fix Your Blurred Photos With Unshake [Freeware]

by MJK on May 16, 2010

[Photo Editor] UnShake is a free private application that can deblur any picture with a reasonably good results.  UnShake is a Java based software and is portable. Being a Java based software, it can run on multiple platforms like Linux, Unix, Mac and Windows based platforms.

The usage of Software is very simple but there is no hard and fast rule to deblur pictures. Every pictures requires different treatment and hence users should try out different options on every picture. Users need to play with the blur severity, the expected output and the amplification settings, though there are other options to play with as well. When you download the software, the folder will contain a file with the instructions on its usage. You can use it to learn more about UnShake. Below are few of the examples as taken from the site of UnShake. The first one is the blurred picture while the other one is the unblur picture as tweaked with UnShake.

According to its official website:

Unshake 1.5 is a Java-2 and C program which improves blurred and shaken photographs by working out the form of the blurring, then deducing what the picture would have looked like if it had not been blurred. Because it is written in Java, once you have installed Sun’s Java 2 all you have to do is to unzip one file to install Unshake on your computer. (The Java Runtime Environment is about 8 MBytes, but growing – if you are prepared to work in the English of the USA and use earlier code, the USA version 1.3 of the JRE is only about 5 MB.) A test version for Macs is available. Also included in this distribution is a library and command-line filter for Linux, UnshakeC1.5r1.

The last thing you would want to consider is image size. Since the program is Java-based, it is rather slow, and a 10 megapixel snap can easily take upwards of 5-7 minutes in processing. It can be helpful to play with a smaller image first and then process the actual ones.

Unshake is a useful utility software that can help you with the blur pictures. However, it is not a perfect solution to it but thats the best you can get for FREE. So enjoy!

Since I am running a Mac, I tried the installation process as outlined. The Applescript and then the Terminal process that was outlined did not work on my MacBook Pro running the latest system software. I am VERY interested in your project/system. Any other ideas to get it running would be appreciated. I took one very bad wedding photo (personal) and it was the cutest one that I took.
