Guide for SSH into Apple TV 2G Windows and Mac [How To]

by MJK on October 30, 2010

SSH is one of the best tool for the iPhone, iPod touch, iPad. This tool is now also available for Apple TV. SSH or Secure Shell is also known as SSS. It is a network protocol that allows us to establish a remote connection between several hosts. SSH lets you access the root privileges on iPhone, iPod, iPad and Apple TV file system and hence you can transfer content in any folder on your iDevice. However, you need to jailbreak your iDevice before you can use SSH to access from your Mac or any other third party program. To SSH into your Apple TV, you need to jailbreak it first. The Apple TV and your PC/Mac system must be connected to a WiFi network. Moreover, you need a third party program to SSH into your device. For Mac system, use Cyberduck and for Windows system use WinSCP.

Step Wise Guide to SSH into Apple TV 2G

Step 1: First you need to write down the Apple TV IP address from Settings menu > General > Network and there check the IP address.

Step 2: One you have noted the IP address, launch the SSH program that you have earlier downloaded. In case of WinSCP, it will redirect you to a new ‘Session’ screen while on Cyberduck, you have to choose the ‘Open New Connection’.  In the following screen on the program, enter the following information as given below:

Hostname or Server = Type your Apple TV’s IP address in this field
Username = Type ‘root’ (without the quotes) in this field
Password = Type ‘alpine’ in this field (without the quotes) or whatever you have

File Protocol = Should be SCP on WinSCP and SFTP on Cyberduck

Step 3: Once the above information is filled,  click on the login button. Now you will see a confirmation message asking if you will accept key exchange / connection with the device with the iPad address.

Congrats! Its done!  You have gained the full access of your Apple TV file system.

Mac users do not need to download an application to use ssh.
Applications->Utilities->Terminal.app works just fine.
