How to compress Large Video files for Youtube etc..

by dave on April 6, 2010

Do you ever find yourself, like me, in a situation where your home video clip or recorded camcorder video size it too big?? I tried many options earlier just to compress and put them online at Youtube or finding other video sharing sites that may offer bigger video size but all in vein. After waiting very long and banging my head virtually into every wall I found a way to compress certain video files, such as MPEG and AVI, with Auto Gordian Knot (AutoGK).

OK; So What is this AutoGK?

Well, AutoGK is a FREE Windows application. It supports Mpeg1, Mpeg2, Transport Streams, Vobs, and virtually any codec used for an .AVI file. You can put these files as input for compression: MPG, MPEG, VOB, VRO, M2V, DAT, IFO, TS, TP, TRP, M2T, and AVI. You can get the output as .AVI files that are converted using the DivX / XviD codecs.

Got it! Now tell me how AutoGK works?

I will guide you through whole process of how we can compress a video that has bigger file size. Launch the program after you have finished installation. Hey, did I tell you where you can download it from? Here! Ok, once you launch the program you see the screen similar to this:

Now select the Input file by clicking on the folder icon to the right of the Input file field.

Browse and choose the video file that you want to compress. Click “Open.”

See that the file we’re choosing is 171,074 KB (or 167 MB). After the file is selected, AutoGK will automatically fill the output field. The output file is copied into the same directory as the input file by default, but you can always change this if you wish so. If the input file is also .AVI, AutoGK will add an “_agk” to the output file so that the original is not overwritten and you can easily spot out which is the original file and which is compressed.

Next, you’ll see any audio tracks listed. You can uncheck the check box if you don’t want the audio track to be accompanied.

Choose one of the Predefined size options, or select a Custom size in MB or Target Quality in percentage.

Next Step is Advanced Parameters which is optional so you can always skip this one. In Advanced Settings, you can choose your codec, if you have a preference, as well as output resolution and output audio. If you’d like to use the DivX codec, you’ll need to download and install it separately.

Now you are almost done. Click “Add Job” to add it to the queue, this means you can add multiple files conversions to the job queue and convert them in one batch.

Click “Start” to begin the conversion process. The Process will begin and you will be able to see the process in Log window. When it will finish compressing, you will be able to see “job finished” status in log window with total time. Note that it may take much time depending on your hardware configuration and the file size.
