How to Jailbreak iPhone 3G iOS 4 GM with Redsn0w

by MJK on June 11, 2010

The Los Angeles based famous hacker Musclenerd has confirmed that redsnow 0.9.5 which is used to jailbreak OS 4.0 beta (1, 2,3,4) is also fully able to jailbreak iOS GM 4 for iPhone 3G. However, there are several bugs in the beta release and hence we will not recommend it for end users unless you fall into the developers category. It is actually meant for developers with Jailbreak apps to tweet their apps for the OS 4 (now called iOS 4). If you are still hell bent on installing iOS 4 GM on your iPhone, here are few points worth considering before making your decision.

1)Redsnow 0.9.5 only works on iPhone 3G and it supports Mac OS only. Support for Windows is expected in the final version

2) Only registered Apple developers can try it out as that is required to install the beta version. However, you can get the beta version on the net as well with a simple “googling”. However do it at your own risk.

3) iOS 4.0 results in enhancing the baseband to 05.13 and hence that means carrier unlock will be gone until the next version release of ultrasnow and blacksn0w.Morever, even if you downgrade later on, the baseband won’t get downgraded so the option will be useless.

Once you take the above precautions, here is the step by step guide to Jailbreak iPhone 3G iOS 4 with Redsnow 0.9.5 beta

1. Install iOS 4 GM on your iPhone 3G as stated here through iTunes 9.2

2. Once that is done, download and Install Redsnow 0.9.5

3. Open up redsnow and follow up the steps until the time it asks you for the firmware selection. As soon as redsnow ask you for a firmware, select iPhone OS 4.0 beta (which ever version you have) ipsw file instead of the iOS 4GM ipsw.  Trust me that was the only thing worth remembering as rest is all understandable since i believe that you are installing iOS 4 on your 3G and hence you must be pretty used to these things.

4. Yups you are close to completing it and go and select “Install Cydia” and click “Next”. Keep in mind before clicking next to connect your iPhone to your pc before moving ahead.  Use DFU (Device firmware Upgrade) mode to install the jailbreak. In case you are not aware what is DFU mode, i still advise go back and don’t attempt this technique. Its done by holding both power and home button for seven seconds and phone screen will turn blank. Release power button but keep holding home button and in few seconds you will activate DFU mode as you will see on iTunes.

5. When your iPhone3G comes back up, you’ll notice Cydia has a blank white icon. You’ll also notice Cydia has no sources in it but don’t worry, its just a few clicks process to get it restored.

6.Go to the Sources panel and add this repo: http://apt.saurik.com/cydia-3.7 (be sure you have a carrier or wifi signal first!). When Cydia restarts, you should see its real logo now, and the standard sources should be ready to use.
