How to LOCATE an email sender

by dave on August 10, 2010

I have been searching for this, for quite a while now and applied some of my old skills to trace down a person who had been sending obnoxious emails to a friend. Well, that’s not the case always… that you only do email address search for obnoxious reasons. You may have received an email from a recruiter, or a business prospect and you may like to know before you’re actually replying. So locating the email sender comes in handy here as well.

It can go from very basic, like email search on any search engine for quickly locating footmarks to rather complex applications like Trace route tool etc. Let’s here see how we can use different tools to locate an email sender.

1. Trace Sender’s location:
You need to open the sender’s email header which contains IP info. If Gmail is your email client, here is how you can fetch the Header info:

  • Open the message you’d like to view headers for.
  • Click the down arrow next to Reply, at the top-right of the message pane.
  • Select Show original.
  • The full headers will appear in a new window.

Look out for the lines that say “Received: from” followed by an IP address in square brackets. If you see multiple entries, use the IP address that is mentioned in the very last. Copy the IP address and in order to locate it on a map you can use this visual trace route. There is no guarantee that it is correct all the time but can give you fair amount of idea.

2. Try Search Engines:
Search Engines are really powerful. The do not leave things unnoticed. So you can take benefit of that and directly paste the email and do email address search. You will get some kind of indexed response if the person whom you are finding has previously used this email address on any forum, blog comment or for that matter has any website.

3. Try Facebook Search:
Facebook has million of users and there is equal chance that the person you are finding may be present on facebook to give you first hand info. Facebook lets you search users by an email address. Just paste the email address of the sender into the Facebook search box and you will know instantly if the person you’re locating with an email is on facebook.

4. Try People Search:
You can try spokeo a people searching site that also offers to track someone via email. Spokeao scans social networking sites including flickr and Youtube to get related info. To view detailed info on Spokeo you have to buy it.
