HP’s ZR30w 30″ LCD Monitor [Review]

by MJK on July 29, 2010

What is the first thing that comes to your mind when buying a monitor? Well generally you wouldn’t really care about how big it should be or how would it look, but think about it, isn’t it the only hardware item that’ll have your eyes stuck on them all the time when ever your working on it?

One of the best brands to look for surely are HP’s products that offer quality and efficiency ‘BIG TIME’, when looking for the best monitor around go for HP’s ZR30w, with a huge 30” display, built around S-IPS with perfect color display and distant wider angles for comfortable viewing.

With an MSRP of 1,300$, HP’s ZR30w is one of the least expensive models around, but with great combo of features and decent design this is just the in thing which will certainly last for many years.

One of the color contrast options in this monitor is very commendable since it gives you the smallest details in dim or low light, because higher the contrast ratio deeper the blacks, making dark scenes visible and clearer.

Any one conscious of color sharpness, or those working on graphics go ahead for the ZR30w which efficiently delivers 4.1 million pixels and 1.07 billion colors for display showing 100% of sRGB and 99% of the Adobe RGB color ranges.

Assembling the LCD/Monitor, HP ZR30w is simple and easy, this model comes with a height adjustable stand, if it does not locks automatically, all you have to do is slide the back of the panel on the stand and turn over the lever, and to remove the panel just move the lever to any side and lift it. Press the button at the back of the base to adjust it’s height up to 4”.

The bezel is 7/8″, the connectivity options are the display port and a DVI port, which are HDCP manageable, it lacks an HDMI port which lessens the extra entertaining options, this is more of a simple yet serious working monitor it does not have a speaker option, there are four USB ports, two at the bottom and two at the left side, HP ZR30w does not give you On Screen Display facility not bad for an average user, but it is equipped with Direct Drive technology making the graphic card vivid and bright that you don’t really need to fix the color contrasts yourself, which is cool.

Down at the bottom are four buttons, a power button, a source button and a +and – button to adjust the brightness, to inform you of either limit of brightness and contrast a blue light flicks three times placed at the bottom left.

overall HP’s LCD monitor comes in handy with features which are just the right choice for people not having much to do with complex graphic work, its simple design makes it look elegant and serious, considering its price 1300$ its one of the least expensive models around with a 30″ display screen but since it’s equipped with lower power panel and PSU HP claim is 85% efficient.

The high end panel is flexible thus giving out even colors on the display makes it perfect for the graphic professionals and well adjusted for both business and personal use.

I need some help
I just purchased a zr30w and had it calibrated with a new spider 4…I dont know if this has anything to do with my problem.
When the monitor first comes on the brightness is where we set it. Within 30 seconds it drops to a new brightness level. Any ideas why?

Bill, The Spider 4 calibration tool creates a profile, which would have a brightness level (in lumens) as part of it. This is reloaded each time you re-boot, typically within 20-30secs. This is why you see the change. Brightness levels are usually set within a certain range depending on the ambient light, e.g. the lower the ambient light, the lower the brightness level. If you prefer a brighter level, then recalibrate the monitor – then it will load the new profile on re-booting.
