“Medal of Honor” Multiplayer Game Stirs Controversy

by MJK on August 23, 2010

The Medal of Honor upcoming game has been made a controversy, thanks to the British Defense Minister Liam Fox.  He has been angered by the fact that the upcoming game has a multiplayer version where people can actually take on the role of Talibans to kill the members of British military. He has dubbed it a “Tasteless” act. I wonder if he actually found taste in it when you have to kill the Talibans? As per the statement given by Liam Fox,

“I am disgusted and angry. It’s hard to believe any citizen of our country would wish to buy such a thoroughly un-British game. I would urge retailers to show their support for our armed forces and ban this tasteless product.”

I think he should leave this decision to the ordinary Brits to make their decision instead of making it a matter of their country patriotism. He should keep his usual politics out of the gaming industry since it is purely meant for Entertainment and not for politics. I never play Medal of Honor to satisfy my lust to kill Talibans or to kill Americans and Brits. I only play it for fun and entertainment. It is based on the same grounds as we used to play hide and seek while being young and one party had to adopt the role of bad guys. The bad guys never meant to be bad but for the sake of the game, they have to do it. We couldn’t play Good Guys Vs Good Guys type of game or Brits killing Americans and vice versa.

Electronic Arts (EA) has defended its decision of introducing Talibans in the game with the following statement:

“The format of the new Medal of Honor game merely reflects the fact that every conflict has two sides. We give gamers the opportunity to play both sides. Most of us have been doing this since we were seven: someone plays the cop, someone must be robber. In Medal of Honor multiplayer, someone’s got to be the Taliban.”

I wonder if Liam Fox has not much to do these days as he seems more worried about the upcoming game trailers and demos instead of the rising deaths of British military personnel in Afghanistan and Iraq. He should worry about something that makes him real Brit instead of being just another lame politician trying to grab every straw to save himself from sinking.
