Safari 5.0.1, updated with extension gallery

by dave on July 28, 2010

Apple today introduced latest update for its popular web browser, Safari. The new version of Safari 5.0.1 introduces the extension gallery.

Safari 5.0.1 also fixes the previous much talked address book bug that could possibly allow other sites to exploit your personal data from your address book using auto fill feature. So it is wise to download latest Safari version 5.0.1.

Coming back to the extensions gallery, Apple introduced support for extensions in Safari 5 previous month to let developers start creating extensions with HTML5, CSS3 and JavaScript web standards. Well, I have been using the word extensions quite often now but haven’t explained yet.

Extensions could be small or may be complex web apps. Safari Extensions Gallery lets users find the extensions they want similar to addons area on Firefox. Extensions can be searched or downloaded from from the Safari menu or at extensions.apple.com and does not need to restart your browser (unlike firefox)

“Safari 5 has been a big hit, and user response to the innovative new Safari Reader has been fantastic,” said Brian Croll, Apple’s vice president of OS X Product Marketing. “We’re thrilled to see so many leading developers creating great extensions and think our users are going to love being able to customise Safari.”

There are plenty of extensions already in various categories including twitter extension, Bing, New York Times, eBay, Amazon and others. Safari is free to download.
