iPad 2 vs iPad 1 – Battery Life comparison

by MJK on March 28, 2011

Mostly it happens that the battery time mentioned in the release notes of a device by the company is usually the ideal time and mostly device gives the backup less than that time. In the case of both generations of iPad, it is  giving backup equal to the time announced by the company and even more than that in some cases.

Announced Battery Timming:

The announced battery timing is the same in both generations of iPad, that is 10 hours of backup in the working condition and backup of a month in stand-by mode. By the working condition, we mean the normal condition. Normal brightness, normal sound and normal applications.

Test in extreme conditions:

While testing the battery life of iPad, a user turned on the sound at highest, brightness at full, connected with Wi-Fi  and saw a movie and played a high graphics game. In these extreme conditions iPad gave the backup of 5 hours  and 54 minutes.

Whereas, to test the battery life of iPad 2, a user saw a movie multiple times with full brightness and volume, connected to Wi-Fi and got a backup of about 10 hours.

Test in Normal Condition:

While testing the iPad and iPad 2 in normal conditions, iPad gave the back up of 11-12 hours and iPad 2 gave the backup of 10 hours.

Similarities:

Wi-Fi Model:

  • Built-in 25-watt-hour rechargeable lithium-polymer battery
  • Up to 10 hours of surfing the web on Wi-Fi, watching video, or listening to music
  • Charging via power adapter or USB to computer system

Wi-Fi + 3G Model:

  • Built-in 25-watt-hour rechargeable lithium-polymer battery
  • Up to 10 hours of surfing the web on Wi-Fi, watching video, or listening to music
  • Up to 9 hours of surfing the web using 3G data network
  • Charging via power adapter or USB to computer system

Both iPads needs 2 amperes by 10W USB adapter to charge.  It can also be charged by using the USB cable, but actually the normal USB hubs of computer provides 500 miliamperes which is half an ampere. So iPad will not get charge by using these USB hubs.  If iPad start getting charge then it will take so many hours to get fully charged. Apple have solved this issue by providing the high powered USB hubs in its computers.

Differences:

The size of battery in both generations of iPad is quite different.

iPad 1G has two batteries in it which are thicker and smaller but in iPad 2, battery is divided into three parts, 2.5mm thinner and 59% wider than the battery in iPad 1G.
