Ubuntu 11.10 Codenamed Oneiric Ocelot

by MJK on March 8, 2011

All of us were doubtful about the code name of Ubuntu 11.10, the most popular operating system which is the successor of Ubuntu 11.04. We all were expecting that this code name could be “Oscillating Ocelot” but actual code name is also some what similar to our expected one. Today, Shuttleworth has announced that the code name for Ubuntu 11.10 will be “Oneiric Ocelot“.

Mark stated that Ubuntu 11.10 is planned to release in October 2011 and the desktop version will be aided with the 2D experience and OpenGL which will not have any hardware requirement to run.

If you look at the history of the version of Ubuntu, you will come to know that  each version of Ubuntu usually had a code name made up of two words starting from the same alphabets, first word an adjective and second word is usually the name of an animal.

  • Ubuntu 5.10 – Breezy Badger
  • Ubuntu 10.04 – Lucid Lynx
  • Ubuntu 11.04 – Natty Narhwal
  • Ubunto  11.10 – Oneiric Ocelot

These both words in the code name of 11.10 looks quite strange for most people including when I read the code name for the first time so for your comfort, here are the explanation of both words.

Oneiric – Oneiric is means of or related to dreams – dreamy in another word. The noun form of Oneiric is Oneirism.

Ocelot – The Ocelot is a nocturnal wildcat of Central America and South America having a dark-spotted buff-brown coat. The are also known as Dwarf Leopards, and has a length of about 68 to 100 centimeters without the tail and weight around 8-10 kilograms.

Here are the words of Mark Shuttleworth about choosing this code name for Ubuntu 10.11.

What we want is something imaginative, something dreamy. Something sleek and neat, too. Something that has all the precision of T S Elliot’s poetry, matched with the “effable ineffability” of our shared values, friendship and expertise. Something that captures both the competence of ubuntu-devel with the imagination of ayatana.

The upcoming version of Ubuntu, Ubuntu 12.04 is expected to start with Letter “P”. Adjective can be a pheonix and animal would most probably be the penguin. What do you think about it? Let us know by writing in the comment section below.
