A good news for Droid lovers is that hackers have successfully rooted Motorola’s Droid , so now users can install apps or services by 3rd parties of their choice outside the set menu by the operators. This new hack works on Android 2.0 and the recently released Android 2.0.1 OTA software update. Root access means you can change the phone’s firmware to in order to have your own themes, apps and custom Roms just like you do on the jailbroken iPhone. So in other words its jailbreak for droid!

How to root Motorola Droid 2.0.1

You can follow the simple guide below to root your Droid phone without worrying about making it a brick. It works on both Android 2.0 and 2.0.1 update:

1 IT IS RECOMMENDED that you first update to the latest Android 2.0.1 OTA software update.

2: Download the file (ROM OTA) for Android 2.0.1 for Motorola Droid posted in the forum discussion here (its a zip file).

3: Now rename this downloaded .zip file to update.zip

4: Next, transfer this file to the SD Card on your phone. You should move it root folder of SD card and not in any other folder

5: Power off your DROID phone. Power it back while holding the X key.

6: When you see a “/!\” symbol, press both vol+ and camera togather

7: Now simply follow the onscreen menu to install update.zip file.

8: Reboot your Droid phone and that’s it! You should now be able to run “su” from your adb shell.

We all must thank [alldroid] for providing us this hack!

Free Android App a Day: Mortgage Calculator for your phone

Posted by mansoor.ehsan On December - 6 - 2009

Today in FAAaD (Free Android Application a Day) we bring you a free Mortgage calculator for your Android phone. This free Mortgage Calculator helps you in your daily mortgage calculations and is available at Android Market.

Features include a touch screen keypad and an amortization schedule that calculates how your payment is split towards principal. According to its developer (now i don’t know if it is right or wrong) this mortgage calculator for G1 got 5000 downloads in first week of release (Ver 1.0). If it is correct then product shows good strength.

Apart from all financial basics this app also has easy user friendly interface like portrait mode makes it easy to key in the values.

Since i don’t have any loan/mortgage, i didn’t use it and frankly am not that great at understanding all that amortization science. Anyways, here are the screenshots:

Free Android App a Day: Ringdroid-Make your own ring tones for Android

Posted by mansoor.ehsan On December - 4 - 2009

I started this FAAaD (Free Android App a Day) thinking that there is a lot of availability for Android users to look in to apps (and yeah it is increasing every day). So why not I take up this role and filter a real good FREE ANDROID APPLICATION on daily basis. We will also extend this round of posts to other areas like iphone, blackberry etc so do keep an eye on that.

Anyways, today’s free application for Android is Ringdroid=make Ring (tones) for (An)droid. So no more payment of cents or dollars on ring tones at least. Ringdroid lets you edit any MP3 on your phone or record a new sound and turn it into a ringtone, alarm, or notification. it also comes with a ‘graphical wave form editor’ which can zoom the wavelength 5 times so you can edit your sound precisely. After you’ve done with editing, you can save it (obviously) in to your phone and can assign this new file as a generic ring tone or assign it to any individual.

Last but not the least you can work on these audio formats to make your ring tone clip: MP3, AAC/MP4 (including unprotected iTunes music), WAV, 3GPP/AMR (this is the format used when you record sounds directly on the handset.

Here are the screen shots:
