Collecta – Real Time Search Engine

Posted by MJK On May - 22 - 2009

collecta

If Wolfram Alpha was not enough to keep the Google team worried, Collecta thought to give another twist to the already complicated future of Google Search Engine.  Not only this, even specialized search companies like Jenni (A movie and tv shows search engine) have been taking some small pies of business away from Google. Anyways, the blog is about a new wonder child whose still in the line to rock the world! Its name is Collecta!

Collecta is a one of the first of its kind. Its a Real Time Search Engine. It can give you everything about a certain keyword as and when it happens.  So if you want to know latest updates about Maria Sharapova or about Swine Flu, you can only just type it into Collecta! Baaaang! The result is a live stream of results as and when they are uploaded to the world wide web. No matter if its a twitter update, any new comment with the your desired keyword, any news story or a picture posted at Flickr, Collecta will bring them all for you at one place. So now you don’t have to refresh the Google News page repeatedly to check the new updates on a fast developing story or glued your eyes to Twitter to check it our for latest information, all your need is just Collecta as it will Collect Each and Everything for you as its name suggests.

collecta-search-engine

Below is the screen shot of the Collecta when i gave it a try. Collecta has given two keywords i.e Obama and Swineflu to test them on their Collecta Real Time Search Engine. The results were impressive. I got a lot of twitter updates and few link to other stories about Obama. Even few wordpress blog posts also appeared in the list. Another website tested the Collecta engine for its updation speed and they found it pretty satisfactory. In any case, its currently just looking for two keywords and hence we can expect such speed, the real test will come when million of people will be searching for wide variety of terms at the same time.

So lets keep our fingers crossed and lets hope to be the first to update this post when Collecta is available for our Collective usage. Gerry Campbell and his team deserves a loud applause.  Click here to visit the Collecta site

Nokia Ovi Store To Feature 20,000 Items At Launch

Posted by MJK On May - 8 - 2009

nokia-ovi-logoNokia Ovi Store (Ovi means Door in Finnish) is all set to bring revolution in the app store world with its starting catalog of 20,000 items. I said “Items” and not apps which means the list will include short videos, webisodes besides other media and entertainment items beside the much sought after apps. But still 20,000 is a big number when compared to a few dozen apps with which Google started its own Android storem while RIM and Apple started their stores with few hundred apps. Even at this moment, Apple Apps Store feature around 40,000 apps.

The competition is  not only about the numbers as Nokia is planning to bring a lot of interesting features and services in its Ovi Apps Store, which is surely going to re-shape the mobile application market. According to Forbes, the Nokia Ovi store can be accessed in two different ways i.e it will come pre loaded on all the new Nokia phones including the upcoming N97 as well as it can be download to their devices through the web. The idea behind pairing the store with the Nokia mobiles is to give a more comprehensive service to Nokia customers and hence also increase the sale of Nokia devices.

The other main feature of Nokia Ovi store is the representation of wide range of languages and cultures, which will increase its popularity in many different countries of the world. It will also make it a truly global store as per the traditions of Nokia, which has the highest market share in global device market.

Ok hold on your breadth as this is not the end of it! There is one other feature in the new Nokia Ovi Store. It has “Recommendations Engine”, which will recommend different items to the user based on user preferences and the preferences of its friends and family. The purpose is to add a feature based on social networking sites.  The recommendations engine will also used GPS facility in Nokia devices to recommend the apps and other items based on the location of the users. Don’t worry if you think its the violation of your privacy as this facility will be enabled by customers themselves.

Can you believe it that UK is now the leading country to have the fastest available broadband connection with a speed of 200 Mbps, thanks to Virgin Media. Previously the title was enjoyed by Japan, thanks to J:Com Cablenet’s service , which is providing 160 Mbps service to Japanese consumers.

In a press release, Virgin Media claimed that it will offer the test service for six months before it starts collecting the results to check the viability of its commercial deployment. The pilot service is offered to 100 lucky users in Ashford, Kent, who will work closely with Virgin Media to shape up the fastest consumer broadband service in UK.

According to the Press Release,

Through the pilot, Virgin Media will be testing applications consumers may be using regularly in the future, including state-of-the-art entertainment services using TV and broadband content in full High Definition and 3D, the ability to deliver applications and support for home IT needs through the network as well as connecting up a host of internet-ready devices such as video conferencing and home surveillance. The Virgin Media pilot will also ensure that the UK stays right at the forefront of the digital revolution as it unfolds globally.

Neil Berkett, chief executive officer at Virgin Media said, “We’re really excited to be embarking on this journey of discovery. With the only true next generation network in the UK, we’re at the forefront of innovation and understanding when it comes to ultrafast broadband services and the 200Mb pilot will give us further insight into how true ‘wideband’ services might be used by consumers.”

We will be really looking forward to the results of these first 100 trial users and their experience with the fastest broadband service in the world available to the consumers. The real probelm arises at the software side. Unless we have services that need such high speed of data, the penetration of the service will never take place.  Having said that, i strongly believe that the lust for faster internet speeds will never be satisfied and hence the uptake of 200 Mbps will not be problem in this data hungry world. We all can imagine Live Streaming of HD movies and tv programs. Even real time video sharings options and much more.

What do you think? Let us know your opinion about this service.

How to Install Windows 7 Release Candidate

Posted by MJK On May - 5 - 2009

windows_7_graphicThe Windows 7 Pre Release Candidate is finally here and you can now install it. The installation process is simple as we can see a lot of people have already installed it on their systems. The Windows 7 RC provides you a chance to see what’s coming up in the new Windows and also helps Microsoft to make the final fixes in the product before its commercial release. Do follow the three step process as outlined by Microsoft to install it.

Before installing Windows 7 RC, please remember the following points:

1) Install on a Test PC

2) Create a backup seprately

3) Keep your Restoration Disk at Hand

4) Update your Anti Virus System

5) Keep an active internet connection

You need the following to install the Windows 7 RC:

  • A blank DVD
  • A PC with a DVD burner
  • A PC for testing that meets these minimum system requirements (specific to Windows 7 RC and subject to change in the final version of Windows 7):
    • 1 GHz or faster 32-bit (x86) or 64-bit (x64) processor
    • 1 GB RAM (32-bit) / 2 GB RAM (64-bit)
    • 16 GB available disk space (32-bit) / 20 GB (64-bit)
    • DirectX 9 graphics processor with WDDM 1.0 or higher driver

Three Step Microsoft Installation Guide

Step 1: Get the Download
1.Visit the Windows 7 RC download page.
2.Choose your language.
3.Choose a 32-bit or 64-bit version of the RC. To see if your computer can run a 64-bit version of Windows, in Performance Information and Tools (Start>Control Panel>Performance Information and Tools) click View and print details and then look under 64-bit capable.
4.Get a Windows 7 RC product key. (You can use the RC for 30 days without a product key, then you’ll need it for activation.)
5.Download the Windows 7 RC.

Step 2: How to Create an Installation DVD

The RC download is an ISO file, which you’ll need to burn onto a blank disc before you can install it. To do that, you’ll need to use software designed for burning ISO files.

In addition to commercial ISO burning software, there are free programs such as ISOBuster and Active ISO Burner. To find ISO Buster, click here or Tucows and search for “ISO,” “DVD,” and “burn”. Follow the instructions that came with your program to create a Windows 7 RC installation disc.

Update on Burning DVD/CD for Windows 7: I monitor the site search items and i realized that some of TN visitors are looking for some easy ways to Burn the DVD so here is another way to get around with it. First of all remember the fact that you will need to burn the ISO files on a DVD as its a must to do step for Windows 7 RC installation. Get a blank DVD and download the freely available software called ImgBurn (click here to download ImgBurn).  Once that is done Insert the Disk into the your drive and launch the ImgBurn software and through the software burn the ISO image file to the blank disk in your drive. This results in a disk/DVD that can be used just like any other installation CD/DVD. The disk can be labelled Windows 7 RC Installation Cd/DVD. Now go ahead and start following the next steps :) . In case any further questions, please feel free to drop your comments.

Step 3: Install the Windows 7 RC

You’ll need to do a “clean installation.” That means you can’t upgrade an existing PC to Windows 7 RC. So if you’re using an existing PC and want to keep the information on it, you’ll need to back it up before you start.

1.Turn on your computer, insert the Windows 7 RC installation disc you created in step 2 into the computer’s DVD or CD drive, and then do one of the following:

* If you want to replace your computer’s existing operating system with the Windows 7 RC, and you don’t need to adjust your disk partitions, go to step 2.

* If your computer doesn’t have an operating system installed, or you want to install the RC on another disk partition, restart your computer with the installation disc inserted in your CD or DVD drive. If you’re asked to press a key to boot from DVD or CD, press any key. If the Install Windows page appears, go to step 2.

If the Install Windows page doesn’t appear and you’re not asked to press a key to start from DVD or CD, you might have to specify that your computer uses its DVD or CD drive as the startup device. See Start Windows from a CD or DVD. After you select your DVD or CD drive as the startup device, restart your computer, and then start Windows from the installation DVD or CD as previously described.

2. On the Install Windows page, follow the instructions, and then click Install now.

3. On the Get important updates for installation page, we recommend getting the latest updates to help ensure a successful installation and protect your computer against security threats. You need an Internet connection to get updates.

4. On the Please read the license terms page, if you accept the license terms, click I accept the license terms. (You must accept to continue the installation.)

5. On the Which type of installation do you want? page, click Custom.

6. On the Where do you want to install Windows? page, do one of the following:

* If you don’t want to specify a specific partition to install Windows on, or create partitions on your hard disk, click Next to begin the installation.

* If you already have another existing partition with enough free space and want to install the Windows 7 RC on that partition to create a multiboot configuration, select the partition you want to use, and then click Next to begin the installation. (Be sure to install the RC on a different partition from where your current version of Windows is installed.)

* If you want to create, extend, delete, or format a partition, click Drive options (advanced), click the option you want, and then follow the instructions. Click Next to begin the installation. (If the Drive options (advanced) option is disabled, you need to start your computer using the installation disc.)
7. Follow the instructions.

Update: According to Microsoft there are some Malware infected Microsoft Windows 7 version on the internet so kindly refrain from getting infected. Read TechNama story on the Malware infected Windows 7

Update2: Now you can also install Windows 7 from USB.

I have found a much easier way to install Windows 7 from a USB Flash drive. Unlike other methods where you have to write complicated commands, this method can be completed even by those who have very little computer background.

The whole process takes only two steps, run UNetbootin, load the Windows 7 ISO file, and finally restart your computer.

Before you begin, you will require the following:

* USB Flash Drive (4GB minimum)
* Windows 7 ISO Image file
* UNetbootin

Now insert the USB drive, run UNetbootin, and select Disk Image as ISO. Browse your local drive for Windows 7 ISO that you downloaded and click Open. Now Select Type as USB and choose the drive. Once done, it will look like a bit similar to the screenshot shown below.

Click OK and it will begin extracting all installation files to the USB drive. The whole process will take some time(10-15 minutes), so have patience.
Once the installation is complete, reboot your computer. Now while your system is starting up press the appropriate button(usually F1, F2, F12, ESC, Backspace, or Escape) to bring up Bios Boot Menu. Change the startup order to boot USB by default, usually you will have to press F6 to move the selected USB device on top. Once done, save changes and restart the system.

4) TestDisk & PhotoRec:

TestDisk is a powerful data recovery utility. It was primarily designed to help recover lost partitions and/or make non-booting disks bootable again when these symptoms are caused by faulty software, certain types of viruses or human error (such as accidentally erasing your Partition Table). PhotoRec is file data recovery software designed to recover lost pictures or lost files from digital camera memory (CompactFlash, Memory Stick, SecureDigital, SmartMedia, Microdrive, MMC, USB Memory Drives), even Hard Disks and CDRom. PhotoRec is safe to use, it will never attempt to write to the drive or memory support you are about to recover from. Recovered files are instead written in the directory from where you are running the PhotoRec program.

TestDisk can run under DOS (either real or in a Windows 9x DOS-box),Windows (NT4, 2000, XP, 2003, Vista), Linux, FreeBSD, NetBSD, OpenBSD, SunOS and MacOS.

7) Pandora File Recovery:
Pandora Recovery is a powerful free tool that provides its users an effective way to attempt recovery of permanently deleted files. And that does not mean restoration of a file from Recycle Bin. Pandora Recovery actually recovers files permanently removed from Recycle Bin, files originally deleted using Shift + Delete keys bypassing Recycle Bin and files deleted from DOS prompt.

Pandora Recovery is not a backup tool – it can recover files that have been deleted months before Pandora Recovery was installed. And while the likelihood of successful recovery is negatively affected by the time passed since the deletion of files Pandora Recovery users were able to recover files eleven years after deletion and more than five years after re-formatting a hard drive!
Pandora Recovery allows you to preview deleted files of certain type (images and text files) without performing recovery. This feature becomes really important if you are forced to recover deleted files to the same drive. Currently you can preview files having several image file types (BMP, GIF, JPG, PNG, ICO,TIF, TGA, PCX, WBMP, WMF, JP2, J2K, JBG, JPC, PGX, PNM, RAS, CUR) and several text file types (TXT, LOG, INI, BAT, RTF, XML, CSS). Quick Viewer allows you preview file contents as text if it cannot find appropriate viewer for it. To use quick viewer you can select deleted file and or click the Quick Viewer icon or right click on deleted file and select ‘Quick View’. Quick View will then display a preview of deleted file.

Pandora file recovery is compatible with OS: Windows 2000, Windows XP, Windows 2003 Server or Windows Vista andFile system: NTFS, NTFS5, NTFS+EFS, FAT16, FAT32. The software is not compatible with any version of Mac OS.

PSP Go! Specs, Release Date & Picture: All Speculation?

Posted by Mr. Waltz On April - 30 - 2009

Rumors and News in the air, and the latest one seems to be  realistic enough to be called in the best one at the moment. 1 UP (A video game website owned by UGO Entertainment) has revealed that the new PSP is named PSP GO, according to their reliable sources. The website further states that redesign will be available in two SKUs, with either eight or 16 GB built-in Flash Memory.

NEW PSP TITLE:

Many have speculated that the update would be called either the PSP 2 or PSP-4000, but our sources claim Sony will forgo a numerical moniker in favor of a subtitle. We’ve heard various rumored code names for the project (including PSP Slide, PSP Flip, and PSP Go!), but given that Sony has introduced the Go! brand of add-ons (the Go!View video on-demand service and 1.3 megapixel Go!Cam) for the European PSP, it seems likely that the new system will in fact be called the PSP Go! Our sources further confirm that this redesign will be available in two SKUs, with either eight or 16 GB of built-in flash memory.

DESIGN & HARDWARE:

There has been speculations on the hardware and design as well. The latest speculation by 1Up has the following to say;

psp

As for the hardware itself, the redesign will include a d-pad, analog nub, and face buttons as part of a sliding unit sticking out below the screen (as seen in our mockup above). Unfortunately for those looking for twin-stick shooter controls, the new system will not have a second analog stick, but instead will remain consistent with the current control configuration.

LAUNCH/RELEASE DATES:

The new PSP would be launched in Japan , this September while in US & EU around November, December.

At this moment there is nothing confirmed by SONY , so we are dealing with speculation and rumors. Although the recent details unveiled by 1up are realistic we have to wait for the offiicial word. We’ll give you more details when more news is available.
