Ubuntu 9.10 Karmic Koala – Review and Download

Posted by MJK On October - 31 - 2009

Its the season of new Operating Systems (OS). We all recently saw the release of Windows 7 and Snow Leopard and now we have this latest addition to the list of new OS i.e Ubuntu 9.10 Karmic Koala. The new OS Ubuntu 9.10 Karmic Koala is the 11th build of the popular Linux-based distribution and promises a new stable environment to it’s users. The famous features of Ubuntu 9.10 Karmic Koala are well explained in a blog post by Mashable in the following words:

Named Karmic Koala, the new Ubuntu (Ubuntu) – as always – promises to be faster and easier to use, bringing version 2.6.31 of the Linux (linux) kernel, latest version of GNOME, and Firefox (Firefox) 3.5. The biggest news, however, is Ubuntu One, a web sync service that gives you 2 GB of online disk space and lets you synchronize notes and contacts, as well as share files between several computers.

Boot time has been significantly reduced, claims Canonicubuntual (the company behind Ubuntu); accessibility has been improved (Ubuntu is now translated into 23 languages), and the OS comes packed with open source software, with more available through Software Center. Finally, netbook owners can download and install a version specifically created for them, called the Ubuntu Netbook Remix.

Another famous Pakistani tech blog site has also very well described the Ubuntu 9.10 Karmic Koala. According to Saad:

The most noticeable two new additions to the Ubuntu platform have been the Ubuntu One and the Ubuntu Software Center. The former is an umbrella name for an exciting suite of online services which provides an enhanced desktop experience, simplifies backup, synchronisation while the later is a repo that provides better information to users about all the software.

For developers, Ubuntu now have a simplified toolset called ‘Quickly’ which makes it fun and easy by automating many of the mundane tasks involved in programming. Pidgin has been replaced by Empathy as the default IM client on all flavors of Ubuntu Karmic Koala.

Samsung Reclaim, a SmartGreenPhone Photos, Review and Specs

Posted by mansoor.ehsan On August - 8 - 2009

Samsung and Sprint officially announced the smartphone that takes its inspiration from being Green. This upcoming mobile phone in the U.S. is made of bio-plastic material.

This ecologically fit phone, Samsung Reclaim, is made from 40 percent of bio-plastics, that is extracted from corn. Wow, that’s amazing! On top of this, the Reclaim is also equipped with eco-centric packaging and accessories; the outer and inner boxes are made from fully reccycled material. It also accompanies an Energy Star approved charger with visual alarm when the phone is fully charged. It is available in 2 colors: sky blue and earth green

Sprint is launching Reclaim starting 16th of August so visit a nearby Sprint store or visit their website. A review at pcworld site states following info on its Green aspect:

In part composed of corn-based bio-plastics, the Reclaim is 80 percent recyclable. Samsung configures it for quick access to popular social media sites and to environment-related Web content. And the company donates $2 from each sale to the Nature Conservancy’s Adopt an Acre program.

I am liking Samsung strategy on sales for donating petty amount of charity with each special model they bring out. Previously, they announced some proceeds out of revenues from the sale of Mr. Cartoon Branded Samsung Messager will go in to promoting Art.

Here are some images of this green phone:

Be smart to lock your Storm in Patterns with PatternLock

Posted by mansoor.ehsan On June - 30 - 2009

Previous day I noticed an interesting BlackBerry Storm app by Tafasa. This cool application PatternLock offers an interesting and fun way locking of your BlackBerry Storm.

Here is how Crackberry blog gives its intro:

The lock screen shows 9 dots in a 3×3 grid. Before using PatternLock, you define what your lock pattern will be. The next time you see the lock screen, you trace your finger in the pattern you defined before and your device will unlock. Any other pattern and in any other order will not unlock the device. The application allows you to either use the default wallpaper or to pick a different background image stored on your device. You can even set it to autolock the device whenever you turn it on. You can also set it to autolock when the device is inactive for a time period of your choosing.

This application does not replace normal locking mechanism of your Storm. You can assign this application to a hot key for easier access. Its icon is always there on home screen pressing which will lock your phone with your defined patterns. [ Note: if you intend to use the autolock feature, you should disable the built in BlackBerry automatic password lock as it will still lock your device (even if automatic PatternLock is enabled).

So be creative as you can to make difficult patterm and obviously don’t be predictive else you will like you have wasted some 2.99$

Here is the screen shot. If any of you have tested it; do share your comments with us.

Games for BlackBerry Storm: Hangman

Posted by mansoor.ehsan On June - 27 - 2009

Lately we have been seing lots of great games for storm and to be open all of them are getting better and great. Most of them (which I have seen) range from $0.99 to $3. The newest game i have seen recently for Storm is Hangman by Tafasa. This classic word game is only for Storm. With a library of over 2900 words, this one/two player game has multiple categories and three difficulty modes and more. the gameplay itself is awesome and gets you engaged for more than hours if you really want to kill your time during travel or waiting for meeting.

Here is a screenshot and you can buy it on crackberry shop. I could not find it on handango although there are hangman games but by other developers. If any of you find an appworld link please do paste it for oter readers. Thanks!hangman

President Barack Obama uses Blackberry phone as once shared by media outlets but i am not yet sure which model he is currently using. However, Chinese manufacturer have came out with their own advertisement featuring Barack Obama endorsing the Blackberry Storm 9500 … or possibly a clone labeled Blockberry Storm 9500. The name is funny! Just wondering if it really blocks everything including the mind behind this new clone phone  made by a Shanghai based Chinese company Haff-Comm.

blackberry-storm-9500

The cloned Blockberry Storm 9500 features Huawei K3, Blockberry 9500 runs windows Mobile 6.1, with a 460MHZ proccessor, and features a 3.2 inch touchscreen, WIFI and bluetooth connectivity,Sirf III GPS navigation and supports 3G and EDGE network.

So let’s hope Obama don’t find out about his purported endorsement campaign for BlockBerry!
