TDash.org – A Web Based Twitter Dashboard

Posted by Halima Khan On January - 26 - 2010

In computer interfaces dashboard is fast making itself felt as a semi-transparent aide to software programs by effectively providing contextual access to commonly used tools. Dashboard displays management information in an easy to read mode thus making navigation more convenient for the consumer just like an easy to use email service provider.

Dashboard for Google is a clean and simple interface and it has been very recently incorporated and has sparked a controversy on privacy issues. However it does make the whole Google Account services giant easier to maintain and that too at a glance. A dashboard for Twitter users has come to the surface as well. It aims to do pretty much the same thing the Google dashboard does. tDash marks tweets as read or lets them stay unread, manages tweets by sender giving easy access to them in a sidebar. In addition it also offers inline opening out of conversations. tDash while giving more email oriented options of managing tweets also supports Twitter users lists and quite a few of keyboard shortcuts.

Oneforty.com reviews tDash at a 5.0 average concluding “it is a completely browser based Twitter client.” KillerStartups reviews no less than 15 internet startups per working day; they cover tDash in their web application tools as a good recommendation for even the very difficult to please users. There are applications available for free for Twitter application users and there are quite a few of them. Amidst this colorful collection of twitter applications there are some wonderful things for a Twitter user to do; however if you still feel yourself at a loss as a Twitter user then tdash.org is what your patience is being rewarded with. It lives up to the expectations of a dashboard interface. It lets you read your tweets, it lets you retweet, it lets you reply to your tweets and all in the same manner you are used to in your email service provider. The tweets are organized for the convenience of the Twitter user according to sender information. The necessary text is right where your instinct as a Twitter user tells you it should be. It is minimalist; hence no Twitter user gets lost there or gets distracted. A major plus is how the application of tDash runs entirely on the browser, and it is compatible to all browsers.

As a first time user of tDash I felt the clean layout made everything accessible and even familiar. It posed no problems for someone like me who is not comfortable with tweeting even when the whole world considers it a communication rage.

Seesmic Mobile App for Android and Blackberry

Posted by MJK On November - 21 - 2009

Seesmic has first revolutionarize the Twitter experience for the Desktop users. It has now decided to venture into the Mobile arena with the launch of its latest Seesmic Mobile App for Android and Blackberry users.  The Seesmic app for mobile devices is free to download and use. You can get the Android version from the Android Market and the BlackBerry version by pointing your BlackBerry to Seesmic.

Currently, Twidroid is the market leader in Twitter mobile app but it is going to lose the battle to the Seesmic app for mobile since Seesmic display is high-definition (the first high-def Twitter client on the platform, according to Loic Lemur, CEO and founder of Seesmic) which makes it more visually attractive.

The guys at TechCrunch had an opportunity to test the Seesmic app for Blackberry and Android and here is what they have to say about each!

Seesmic App for Blackberry

seesmicb1The BlackBerry app, which works with the devices running OS 4.6 or higher, has a extremely sleek nice interface, which is optimized for BlackBerry users with all sorts of efficiencies. You can quickly change from different timelines, easily switching from your inbox, to mentions, to direct messages. Plus, you can monitor various Twitter accounts within one appp. When you send a Tweet, you can shorten a link via Bit.ly, and upload pictures or videos via yFrog. One compelling feature is the ability to email a Tweet to a contact directly from the Tweet.

The app also includes search (Seesmic stores all the info in cache) and will also feature notifications of new Tweets and DMs while you are scrolling through email (a little raccoon will pop up with a number of new Tweets, says Le Meur). And hands down the two best features of the Blackberry app is the ability to see your Twitter lists directly from the app and geolocation, so you’ll be able to tweet your location directly from the app. Seesmic just added geolocation, as the API was released yesterday. Facebook integration will be added in the near future.

Seesmic App for Android

seesmica1The Android App also features a very sleek design and a user-friendly UI. The most noticeable advantage is how fast the app is. Le Meir says the app is native to the Android and claims its the “Tweetie for the Android.” Via a touch interface, you can easily navigate though threaded timelines, direct messages, different accounts, and @replies. And you can email Tweets as well as easily switch to landscape mode.

When you Tweet you’ll see options for Tweeting publicly or via a DM and shorten links through Bitl.ly. You can easily attach a picture or video via yFrog. And here’s the kicker-you can also upload videos directly to YouTube via the app. You can also access other users profiles, see his/her Tweets, who he/she is following and then follow the users. In addition you can also block or unfollow a user.

While Twitter rolled out the geolocation API yesterday, Seesmic hasn’t integrated its API into the app. But the app still features a geolocation tool that lets you embed your location in a Tweet via the Android’s GPS, which will show your location on Google Maps.

The app works with all models of the Android and was optimized for the newly launched Verizon Droid. While the Android app doesn’t have list functionality or Facebook integration, Le Meur says these features will be added in the near future.

10+ ways you can Twitter on S60 devices

Posted by mansoor.ehsan On August - 15 - 2009

Having a Symbian phone and looking for some twitter client? Here, I have tried to put all the popular available twitter clients for s60 devices. I remember when i required one twitter client for my symbian phone, i did lots of googling to find a good client. Since i tried almost all of them so i thought to put a blogpost.

Currently there are some good apps dedicated purely for twitter, then there are apps that include twitter as a widget or as an additional feature. Apart from installing native twitter apps you can also log on to web services that offer tweeting. So here you go with all the details:

TWITTER APPLICATIONS FOR S60: (The order below does not show any preference for being best)

1. Gravity:

Gravity is a popular native Twitter client for the S60 platform with support for S60v3 and S60v5. It has everything that you can imagine and see in a desktop client like twitter search, trending topics, support for multiple accounts, Laconica, Ping.fm, posting of your images via MobyPicture & TwitPic and on top of everything it has a clean looking interface and comes with two themes.

The newer version also provides support for facebook where you can ‘like’ or ‘comment’ on news feeds and statuses coming from friends. The best thing is uploading your images right from your media gallery to TwitPic. So any time you an action going around that can become a hot story, just take a snap and TwitPic it creating waves right from your twitter.

All in all, Gravity gives you all twitter functions including tweet, reply, retweet, DM, follow & unfollow, block, create favourites, search, auto-update and with many other great features. Gravity is not free but you can try a 10 day demo (with all features) for free. You can download and see more details here.

2. Twittix:

Twittix is another mobile resident Twitter client for S60 by Mojos Mobile. Twittix is more simpler as compared to Gravity but has more or less same functionality. It supports Symbian S60v3 and v5 so you have all N and E series phones covered. It provides all twitter functions like Tweet, Reply, Direct Message, ReTweet, Follow and Unfollow. Since tabbed view has become a trademark of all twitter apps, therefore it is also followed by our friends at Mojos Studios.  It also provides support for multiple accounts and image uploading like Gravity. The application comes with support for English and German languages.

This app also supports portrait and landscape modes so you can have a bit of ease with more horizontal space when you are in landscape mode. Twittix is not free and costs 4.95 EUR. You can see more details and download the trial version here

3. Tweets60:

A relatively simpler app that comes free of cost. Same like above two it also supports S60v3 and v5. It offers basic tweeting features like Tweet, Reply, Direct Message, ReTweet and Follow. It does not provides support for multiple accounts neither gives the search functionality. We can understand that since its a free client, it can not offer everything thus image uploading is not supported. But being free does not mean that you’ll be kept deprived of basic yet important features like opening links from within the tweets.

You can download the free version of TweetS60 here.

4. Iamdoing:

This Twitter client for S60 phones is free for use. Even though it is still in alpha stage but i have faith that it will come good in future and may turn out to be a most popular choice. The most interesting thing is an auto support for generating tiny URLs. Yes, put any URL and it will be converted using http://is.gd service which i did not find even in Gravity. I mean the interesting thing is that you can not expect such things in a FREE client! So be more surprised that it also gives support for splitting a long message into several 140 char messages, adding “…” and using the proper order for presenting the pieces ;-)

Obviously it offers all basic tweeting functions. You can download this light piece of software here.

5. Fring

Fring basically being an IM client has added support for twitter with its latest add-on. Its twitter functionality lets you perform basic twitter functions. You can view others’ profiles, check-out your followers and see who’s following you. It also provides searching for keywords or hashtags used by tweeple.

Like other clients above, you have the option here in Fring to open tinyURLs from all incoming tweets. Currently it does not offer uploading images or have multiple accounts but since it is free and provides all basic features with a value add of IMs, i would always like to have it in my symbian phone.

You can download and seek more info on Twitter add-on for Fring at this link.

6. Twibble mobile

Twibble is a free Twitter utility for Java enabled smartphones. You have access to all features like tweet, retweet, follow and unfollow, send reply, DM, open a link, mark a tweet as favorite, search users or hashtags from within the tweets, image browser to select and tweet images through twitpic and mobypicture, auto-connect to fetch latest tweets, configure it for notifications so it tells you when you have a tweet, and and and… have i missed anything?

This is all feature rich free java app for twitter and comes neat with couple of themes and looks even cool with full screen functionality. Even though it does not offer using multiple accounts but still has lot to offer. If you’re not in mood to spend bucks and can compromise on multiple accounts then this should be your real choice.

You can download and see full feature list at this link.

7. Snaptu

I downloaded Snaptu to keep myself updated with cricket scores from the mighty cricinfo. After installation i found out there was much more to offer from Snaptu including Twittwer. Even though it is a discussion of twitter clients but still i would like to mention that it offers some good and fun selection of fun apps like twitter, facebook, picassa, google calander, accuweather updates, cricinfo scors, rss readers and much much more. A must have app!

Coming to its twitter functionality, its not that fancy and you can perform only basic features like tweet, re-tweet, reply, open links and follow/unfollow a user.

Find info on download and features at this link.

8. Twim

Twim is a mobile twitter client developed by Tommi Laukkanen. It is a java application and runs on Java MIDP 2.0 profile phones. You should not expect this free app to have a catchy interface as Gravity or other paid apps but it still has good features. You can tweet, reply, retweet, mark a tweet as favorite, send direct message, open link in phone browser, search for tweets and upload image through twitpic (and more). Inclusion of Mobypicture service means you can also share videos.

It does not offer multiple accounts, configureable notifications and auto refresh to fetch new tweets. You can download this light twitter client here.

9. Jibjib

Jibjib is a simple and free J2ME client for twitter. This open source java build requires CLDC 1.0 and MIDP 1.0 to run on your phones. It is all a basic twitter application and does not have very much to offer but since it is out there, i have just mentioned it as “another twitter client” :p

web based:

10. m.slandr.net:

m.slandr.net is mobile web app where you can use twitter in an easy way. After you log in, you see the time line. All the basic functions are there with tweet, re-tweet, mentions (all replies mentioning you with @), direct messages and search. You can view a user profile and then follow or unfollow him/her. Its ‘Geo’ function saves your location and takes it as reference for its ‘Local’ function where it shows all the tweets coming in within 5 miles of your location. This whole function makes it real interesting.

Its Search also has versatility where you can not only search for a given term find tweets from a user using “from:quotations”, find tweets to a user using “to:technama”, find tweets referencing a user: “@technama”, find tweets containing a hashtag: “#technology” and also find tweets with an attitude like :) or :p. This kind of search is no exception but having it in a free web app means something good!

You can access it here from your mobile or i would suggest it works even better than twitter on web: m.slandr.net

11. dabr.co.uk

Dabr is an open source mobile web interface to Twitter’s API similar to slandr.net. Loaded with all features, it makes your life easier if you have not installed any app and still use twitter. You can reply to any tweet, mark it as favorite, re-tweet it or send a direct message to tweeple of that tweet. You can see replies mentioning you, see DMs for you, make a search, browse favorite tweets, browse friends or followers and then follow/unfollow and block/unblock them.

Interestingly it also offers twitpicing your images from your media gallery. So thumbs up adding this feature.

12. m.twitter.com

Similar to its web version, the mobile is no good too. You can only send your updates or follow a user, open links, view replies where you have been mentioned with @.

###

I am sure there would be many more out there…if you’re using a different way to tweet from s60 then do write for us and our readers in the comments area. I will also make a comparative chart comparing all of above but i will do that after a break :P .

A side note is that you can follow technama on twitter as well: @technama which pulls all the latest blog posts. Apart from that my personal account on twitter is @rmansoo

Twittorati – Technorati Turns to Twitter

Posted by MJK On July - 31 - 2009

Technorati, the world first blog search engine has decided to capitalize on the power of Twitter to launch its own version of Technorati on Twitter and hence the name of Twittorati has been assigned to it. The website works relatively in same manner as the classical version of Technorati but the only difference is that instead of blogs, it features Twitter updates of top bloggers.

According to ReadWriteWeb:

The service allows users to view the links most tweeted as well as displaying Technorati’s original concept of showcasing the internet’s top trafficked blogs and content from its contributors. One interesting component of the site is the fact that users can view the pictures shared by today’s Twitter and blogging elite.

While the community’s words may be articulate and cohesive, the world’s top rated bloggers prove themselves to be a fairly average bunch of human beings. You’ll notice the majority of the photographs feature blurry crowds at networking events, office furniture and gooey plates of food.

With a catchphrase like, “Where the Blogosphere and Twittersphere meet” it will be interesting to see which sphere will hype the service more. Some of the featured bloggerati include ReadWriteWeb’s Richard MacManus, Huffington Post Editor Arianna Huffington and Zen Habits founder Leo Babauta.”

However, i am wondering if it is justified to include same top bloggers in the list which they have on Technorati? I would ideally go for top Twitter users instead of twitter accounts of top 100 bloggers. The list might include a lot of bloggers but it might make Twitter a separate medium like blogging instead of just being a complimentary service to the orignal Technorati.

twittorati_technorati_jul09

What do you guys think about this? Do you think the current version of Twittorati has potential to achieve succcess to the scale  of Technorati or will it be just that Technorati is getting a bit obsolete without these new mediums like Twitter etc?

Download Twitter 101 Guide for Business

Posted by MJK On July - 24 - 2009

We have earlier covered 10 amazing research facts about twitter in our blog post where we shared a research study conducted at Harvard University. The research study found out that Twitter faces a serious user retention problem and there are loads of inactive users as well. In such a background, Twitter wants to increase its foothold in businesses and make it a more helpful tool for corporations looking for new avenues to increase their reach to their customers.

Twitter launched a new Twitter 101 Guide for Businesses that will help them to promote their business via Twitter. According to Twitter official site, here is how Twitter can help businesses;

“Twitter is a communications platform that helps businesses and their customers do a number of useful things. As a business, you can use it to quickly share information with people interested in your company, gather real-time market intelligence and feedback, and build relationships with customers, partners and other people who care about your company. As an individual user, you can use Twitter to tell a company (or anyone else) that you’ve had a great–or disappointing–experience with their business, offer product ideas, and learn about great offers.”

The Twitter 101 Guide for Business has following sections:

“What is Twitter”, “Getting started”, “Learn the lingo”, “Best practices”, “Case studies” and “Other resources”.

The case studies provide an idea to the users as to how they can better use Twitter to their benefit. At this stage, everything is for free but Twitter might start charging its business users in the future. Let’s see if this new initiative helps Twitter increase the users retention and their compel the dormant users to actively start using it?

Now Bing @Twitter with BingTweets: Welcome Twitter Search Engine

Posted by mansoor.ehsan On July - 15 - 2009

Bing @Twitter: No, this is not similar to what we posted three days ago; Google @Twitter which was list of all Google official accounts at Twitter. This is a fusion of Twitter and Bing to bring for you a Search Engine that has neat concept.

BingTweet shows trending topics at Twitter in real time with categorization. So you have overall “Popular Now” trending topics aong with people, places and products trends. So you can check out if Obama’s tag is bustling with activity or Britney is being #hashed alot. On the left column, tweets are tickering with popular tab you selected. Then there is Bing+Twitter search field that displays Bing search results (as in the ressults you would have only searched on Bing) and the twitter search results for that keyword and this tweet result appears in left ticketing column.

All in all i liked the concept and how will google react to this? They were already counting how much share has bing fetched from their search pie when Bing has come up with this interesting search combination. Do give us your comments about BingTweet…mine is go BingTweet go! Here is a screenshot:

Twitter looking for CFO – Hires General Counsel from Google

Posted by mansoor.ehsan On July - 12 - 2009

Michael Arrington has just broke at TechCrunch that @Twitter is looking to hire CFO. TechCrunch says they’ve confirmed that Twitter is aggressively looking to pick executives across the board and a number of candidates have been interviewed for the CFO job.

Another news broke at NY Times (also mentioned by Michael) that Twitter has hired Alexander Macgillivray, who has been serving as Associate General Counsel for Product and IP, as their new General Counsel. Macgillivray is still at Google, and his start date at Twitter has not yet been confirmed.

Note that, Macgillivray has been playing a key role in Google’s legal battles over their book scanning efforts and this would certainly be worrisome for Google as the matter is still not settled at the US department of Justice.

Another thing that is interesting to note is that everybody was presuming that Twitter will be sold off sooner or later but this impression has been cleaned off from top executives’ minds joining Twitter that they are gonna stay longer.

Tweet your Flickr photo via Flickr2Twitter

Posted by mansoor.ehsan On July - 6 - 2009

Tweet Tweet flickr is here to tweet your Flickr photo stream…can it be a twitpic killer? I know most of my friends have Flickr account and they all put their photos on Flickr.

This Flickr2Twitter allows you to upload your photo directly to Flickr and Twitter at the same time, or tweet a photo already on Flickr, using a special short Flic.kr URL. Here is how you can set it up:

  1. Go to your Flickr, then click on “You” menu option and then choose “Your Account”
  2. Click on “Extending Flickr” tab and the click “Edit”
  3. I just realized if I copied and pasted the direct URL, it works (obviously you have to sign in)
  4. Next you have to authorize your twitter account
  5. Once authorized, now you can tweet your photo from email (so you can do it from your mobile) or directly from your photostream by clicking on “Blog this” from a specific photo.

Now here is all screen shot tour of how to set it up:

Is Twitter Taking Sides in Iran Election Protests?

Posted by MJK On June - 16 - 2009

The Twitter team has moved their scheduled maintenance times to help the protesters in Iran to easily communicate with each other for planning their next protest rally against government of Ahmedinejad.  If you check out the Twitter most famous terms these days, it is #Iranelection and #Iran. This means that it has become an important means of communication for the people inside and outside Iran to get themselves updated about the latest happenings. I checked out the term #Iranelection in twitter from our profile TechNama to check out the updates.

twitteroniran1

There were people from around the globe spreading the stories, which frankly speaking, i found hard to verify. Anyways, the Twitter has decide to reschedule their scheduled maintenance to 2 – 3pm Pacific Time, which is middle of the night in Iran. According to Biz Stone of Twitter

A critical network upgrade must be performed to ensure continued operation of Twitter. In coordination with Twitter, our network host had planned this upgrade for tonight. However, our network partners at NTT America recognize the role Twitter is currently playing as an important communication tool in Iran.

I wonder what made Twitter do this? Is it that it wants to support its users in Iran or is it that it is taking side with the anti-Government protests taking place in Iran? I think Twitter should have avoided it as it will become political and this may result in serious repercussion for the company. I won’t be surprised if Twitter is banned in many countries around the world which have a strict media regulations since Twitter has lost its neutrality with this move.

Do let me know if you think Twitter is right in taking sides in the current standoff?
