Twittorati – Technorati Turns to Twitter

Posted by MJK On July - 31 - 2009

Technorati, the world first blog search engine has decided to capitalize on the power of Twitter to launch its own version of Technorati on Twitter and hence the name of Twittorati has been assigned to it. The website works relatively in same manner as the classical version of Technorati but the only difference is that instead of blogs, it features Twitter updates of top bloggers.

According to ReadWriteWeb:

The service allows users to view the links most tweeted as well as displaying Technorati’s original concept of showcasing the internet’s top trafficked blogs and content from its contributors. One interesting component of the site is the fact that users can view the pictures shared by today’s Twitter and blogging elite.

While the community’s words may be articulate and cohesive, the world’s top rated bloggers prove themselves to be a fairly average bunch of human beings. You’ll notice the majority of the photographs feature blurry crowds at networking events, office furniture and gooey plates of food.

With a catchphrase like, “Where the Blogosphere and Twittersphere meet” it will be interesting to see which sphere will hype the service more. Some of the featured bloggerati include ReadWriteWeb’s Richard MacManus, Huffington Post Editor Arianna Huffington and Zen Habits founder Leo Babauta.”

However, i am wondering if it is justified to include same top bloggers in the list which they have on Technorati? I would ideally go for top Twitter users instead of twitter accounts of top 100 bloggers. The list might include a lot of bloggers but it might make Twitter a separate medium like blogging instead of just being a complimentary service to the orignal Technorati.

What do you guys think about this? Do you think the current version of Twittorati has potential to achieve succcess to the scale  of Technorati or will it be just that Technorati is getting a bit obsolete without these new mediums like Twitter etc?

Koogle , Search Engine For Israelis

Posted by Mr. Waltz On July - 6 - 2009

A new ‘kosher’ search engine called Koogle has been launched for orthodox Jews living in Israel, which will allow them to surf cyberspace without ever encountering unbecoming images or faith wavering text and keep the dangers of subversion and temptation at bay.  Koogle will follow the religious standards set by the rabbis and is aimed at helping orthodox Jews stay on the stipulated path.

Apparently a jibe at Google, Koogle will filter out forbidden material and provide its consumers kosher bits and pieces from the net.

The search engine links to Israeli news and shopping sites but the results are filtered to exclude items deemed unsuitable.

“This is a kosher alternative for ultra-Orthodox Jews so that they may surf the Internet,” Yossi Altman told Reuters, Jerusalem. “The site was developed in part at the encouragement of rabbis who sought a solution to the needs of ultra-Orthodox Jews to browse the Web particularly for vital services,” he added.

Nothing can be posted on Saturdays, the Jewish Sabbath, as Jews are banned from all types of work and business activity. If Koogle users attempt to search for an item or post a message on the Sabbath, it crashes and won’t let you. The label ‘Koogle’ is a play on the name of a Jewish noodle pudding dish, known as kugel, and Google, the search market leader.

Koogle was also the brand name for a flavored peanut butter marketed by Kraft Foods in 1971 but later was discontinued.

Collecta – Real Time Search Engine

Posted by MJK On May - 22 - 2009

collecta

If Wolfram Alpha was not enough to keep the Google team worried, Collecta thought to give another twist to the already complicated future of Google Search Engine.  Not only this, even specialized search companies like Jenni (A movie and tv shows search engine) have been taking some small pies of business away from Google. Anyways, the blog is about a new wonder child whose still in the line to rock the world! Its name is Collecta!

Collecta is a one of the first of its kind. Its a Real Time Search Engine. It can give you everything about a certain keyword as and when it happens.  So if you want to know latest updates about Maria Sharapova or about Swine Flu, you can only just type it into Collecta! Baaaang! The result is a live stream of results as and when they are uploaded to the world wide web. No matter if its a twitter update, any new comment with the your desired keyword, any news story or a picture posted at Flickr, Collecta will bring them all for you at one place. So now you don’t have to refresh the Google News page repeatedly to check the new updates on a fast developing story or glued your eyes to Twitter to check it our for latest information, all your need is just Collecta as it will Collect Each and Everything for you as its name suggests.

Below is the screen shot of the Collecta when i gave it a try. Collecta has given two keywords i.e Obama and Swineflu to test them on their Collecta Real Time Search Engine. The results were impressive. I got a lot of twitter updates and few link to other stories about Obama. Even few wordpress blog posts also appeared in the list. Another website tested the Collecta engine for its updation speed and they found it pretty satisfactory. In any case, its currently just looking for two keywords and hence we can expect such speed, the real test will come when million of people will be searching for wide variety of terms at the same time.

So lets keep our fingers crossed and lets hope to be the first to update this post when Collecta is available for our Collective usage. Gerry Campbell and his team deserves a loud applause.  Click here to visit the Collecta site
