Global Mobile Data Traffic Surpass Voice

by MJK on March 24, 2010

Finally the moment has arrived when Global Mobile Data surpassed the traditional leader Voice in the 25 years history of the industry. The moment is a historic in nature since it marks the true shift in the industry practices all across the globe. The numbers have been shared by Ericsson according to their measurements of live networks covering all regions of the world.

Ericsson’s findings show that data traffic globally grew 280% during each of the last two years, and is forecast to double annually over the next five years. The crossover occurred at approximately 140,000 Terabytes per month in both voice and data traffic. The data traffic increase is contributing to revenue growth for operators when more and more consumers use data traffic generating devices such as Smartphones and PCs. During the same period, Ericsson measurements show that traffic in 3G networks surpassed that of 2G networks.

“This is a significant milestone with some 400 million mobile broadband subscriptions now generating more data traffic than the voice traffic from the total 4.6 billion mobile subscriptions around the world,” said Hans Vestberg, Ericsson President and CEO, speaking at a management briefing in Las Vegas. “Our view that the appeal of anywhere, anytime connectivity would drive mobile broadband growth is confirmed by the real world measurements under taken by Ericsson.”

Social networking sites on mobile devices and mobile broadband-based PCs now account for a large percentage of mobile data traffic. For example, over 200 mobile operators in 60 countries are deploying and promoting Facebook mobile products, with over 100 million active users accessing Facebook through their mobile devices.

In recent consumer survey of 4,580 respondents in six mature markets, Ericsson found that a mobile broadband connection had become as personal as the mobile phone, with 80% of respondents saying they would not share their laptop. Another 65% of said they would not share their mobile broadband connection.

Chinese based Huawei telecom has crossed Alcatel Lucent to become No. 3 vendor for telecom equipment worldwide, according to Dell’Oro’s first quarter rankings. . Swedish vendor Ericsson has slightly increased its  market share and maintained its position as market leaders in the telecom equipment market with a total market share of 33%.  The second vendor Nokia Siemens Network (NSN) market share witnessed a slight drop from 24% to 21% of the global telecom gear.

However, Huawei witnessed a double growth in this recession hit market. Its growth has been termed remarkable by industry analysts. Huawei total market share reached to 15% while the market share of Alcatel-Lucent dropped from 16% to 14%. The irony is that vendors like Alcatel-Lucent and Nokia Siemens are not seeing a very bright future and they forecast a shrinking market in the next few years.

On the other side, Huawei proved to be the market saviour with its massive 3G contracts, which kept the market from an even steeper decline. “Intense price competition among vendors vying for share of the Chinese 3G tenders resulted in very steep price erosion, particularly in CDMA,” said Dell’Oro analyst Scott Siegler.
