Mobile VoIP is a hot area and now a report by Juniper says mVoIP to have a staggering growth within 5 years. According to new report, Mobile Voice Strategies (mVoIP Opportunities & Business Models, 2010-2015) by Juniper Research, the number of mobile VoIP minutes will rise from 15 billion this year to 470.6 billion minutes by 2015. This is 31 times more bigger than what we currently have in terms of mVoIP voice minutes.

According to the research company, developed markets will remain the key target segment where traffic will steadily rise over the forecast period but other regions will also have its own shares. [click to continue…]

Ever wondered how you could save on your phone bills and specially if you have to call out of your country regularly? There are many options like Skype, Truphone, Jajah and now more recently on the buzz is Vopium (hey, what’s with the name?)

Vopium, a Copenhagen based business, is determined to drive down the cost of international mobile phone calls.  If you do have Wi-Fi you can make FREE calls to other users using Vopium in Wi-Fi zone. That comes in handy while you’re traveling and can use airport hotspots and call back your office (that’s the most likely you will have hotspots here). It also backs up your phone contacts and calendar entries (yea, similar to zyb) so you don’t have to worry if you loose your phone or have to shift your contacts to your new phone.

Did i tell you that this mobile application is compatible with more than 500 devices (yeah, that’s what Vopium claims) from old classic devices like Nok 6230 to latest shimmering touch phones like iPhone, Magic and Android etc.

As far as pricing is concerned, Vopium has slightly better rates in few countries. I would rather place it in equal terms with Truphone or other mobile VoIP providers for pricing. But its good to always have some alternatives and your decision to go for any mobile VoIP should be based on does it support my phone, how is the voice quality, does it support my country, which one is cheaper and who is good in user support?

Invitation to test & get free half an hour of International calls
Vopium does invites all the users to test Vopium. Go to http://vopium.com/ or Send “get” to +447781480717 and start with 30 free minutes plus 30 international SMS.

What it lacks?

  • It lacks integrated IM
  • Although it supports popular countries but still they need to go beyond 18 countries with likes of India, China and south Africa. “Not supporting” means people residing in these countries can not use Vopium to make calls
  • Probably they can introduce more interesting packages. I am in favor of ALL FREE.

To wrap up here is the summary

  • Low cost international calls (90% off) with good voice quality
  • Not to worry about your contacts and calendar as Vopium Synch makes a remote and secure backup.
  • Free calls in Wi-Fi hotspots
  • No need to change cell phone or SIM card
  • It still has a long way to go
