10+ ways you can Twitter on S60 devices

by dave on August 15, 2009

Having a Symbian phone and looking for some twitter client? Here, I have tried to put all the popular available twitter clients for s60 devices. I remember when i required one twitter client for my symbian phone, i did lots of googling to find a good client. Since i tried almost all of them so i thought to put a blogpost.

Currently there are some good apps dedicated purely for twitter, then there are apps that include twitter as a widget or as an additional feature. Apart from installing native twitter apps you can also log on to web services that offer tweeting. So here you go with all the details:

TWITTER APPLICATIONS FOR S60: (The order below does not show any preference for being best)

1. Gravity:

Gravity is a popular native Twitter client for the S60 platform with support for S60v3 and S60v5. It has everything that you can imagine and see in a desktop client like twitter search, trending topics, support for multiple accounts, Laconica, Ping.fm, posting of your images via MobyPicture & TwitPic and on top of everything it has a clean looking interface and comes with two themes.

The newer version also provides support for facebook where you can ‘like’ or ‘comment’ on news feeds and statuses coming from friends. The best thing is uploading your images right from your media gallery to TwitPic. So any time you an action going around that can become a hot story, just take a snap and TwitPic it creating waves right from your twitter.

All in all, Gravity gives you all twitter functions including tweet, reply, retweet, DM, follow & unfollow, block, create favourites, search, auto-update and with many other great features. Gravity is not free but you can try a 10 day demo (with all features) for free.

2. Twittix:

Twittix is another mobile resident Twitter client for S60 by Mojos Mobile. Twittix is more simpler as compared to Gravity but has more or less same functionality. It supports Symbian S60v3 and v5 so you have all N and E series phones covered. It provides all twitter functions like Tweet, Reply, Direct Message, ReTweet, Follow and Unfollow. Since tabbed view has become a trademark of all twitter apps, therefore it is also followed by our friends at Mojos Studios.  It also provides support for multiple accounts and image uploading like Gravity. The application comes with support for English and German languages.

This app also supports portrait and landscape modes so you can have a bit of ease with more horizontal space when you are in landscape mode. Twittix is not free and costs 4.95 EUR.

3. Tweets60:

A relatively simpler app that comes free of cost. Same like above two it also supports S60v3 and v5. It offers basic tweeting features like Tweet, Reply, Direct Message, ReTweet and Follow. It does not provides support for multiple accounts neither gives the search functionality. We can understand that since its a free client, it can not offer everything thus image uploading is not supported. But being free does not mean that you’ll be kept deprived of basic yet important features like opening links from within the tweets.

4. Iamdoing:

This Twitter client for S60 phones is free for use. Even though it is still in alpha stage but i have faith that it will come good in future and may turn out to be a most popular choice. The most interesting thing is an auto support for generating tiny URLs. Yes, put any URL and it will be converted using http://is.gd service which i did not find even in Gravity. I mean the interesting thing is that you can not expect such things in a FREE client! So be more surprised that it also gives support for splitting a long message into several 140 char messages, adding “…” and using the proper order for presenting the pieces ;-)

Obviously it offers all basic tweeting functions.

5. Fring

Fring basically being an IM client has added support for twitter with its latest add-on. Its twitter functionality lets you perform basic twitter functions. You can view others’ profiles, check-out your followers and see who’s following you. It also provides searching for keywords or hashtags used by tweeple.

Like other clients above, you have the option here in Fring to open tinyURLs from all incoming tweets. Currently it does not offer uploading images or have multiple accounts but since it is free and provides all basic features with a value add of IMs, i would always like to have it in my symbian phone.

6. Twibble mobile

Twibble is a free Twitter utility for Java enabled smartphones. You have access to all features like tweet, retweet, follow and unfollow, send reply, DM, open a link, mark a tweet as favorite, search users or hashtags from within the tweets, image browser to select and tweet images through twitpic and mobypicture, auto-connect to fetch latest tweets, configure it for notifications so it tells you when you have a tweet, and and and… have i missed anything?

This is all feature rich free java app for twitter and comes neat with couple of themes and looks even cool with full screen functionality. Even though it does not offer using multiple accounts but still has lot to offer. If you’re not in mood to spend bucks and can compromise on multiple accounts then this should be your real choice.

7. Snaptu

I downloaded Snaptu to keep myself updated with cricket scores from the mighty cricinfo. After installation i found out there was much more to offer from Snaptu including Twittwer. Even though it is a discussion of twitter clients but still i would like to mention that it offers some good and fun selection of fun apps like twitter, facebook, picassa, google calander, accuweather updates, cricinfo scors, rss readers and much much more. A must have app!

Coming to its twitter functionality, its not that fancy and you can perform only basic features like tweet, re-tweet, reply, open links and follow/unfollow a user.

8. Twim

Twim is a mobile twitter client developed by Tommi Laukkanen. It is a java application and runs on Java MIDP 2.0 profile phones. You should not expect this free app to have a catchy interface as Gravity or other paid apps but it still has good features. You can tweet, reply, retweet, mark a tweet as favorite, send direct message, open link in phone browser, search for tweets and upload image through twitpic (and more). Inclusion of Mobypicture service means you can also share videos.

It does not offer multiple accounts, configurable notifications and auto refresh to fetch new tweets.

9. Jibjib

Jibjib is a simple and free J2ME client for twitter. This open source java build requires CLDC 1.0 and MIDP 1.0 to run on your phones. It is all a basic twitter application and does not have very much to offer but since it is out there, i have just mentioned it as “another twitter client” :p

web based:

10. m.slandr.net:

m.slandr.net is mobile web app where you can use twitter in an easy way. After you log in, you see the time line. All the basic functions are there with tweet, re-tweet, mentions (all replies mentioning you with @), direct messages and search. You can view a user profile and then follow or unfollow him/her. Its ‘Geo’ function saves your location and takes it as reference for its ‘Local’ function where it shows all the tweets coming in within 5 miles of your location. This whole function makes it real interesting.

Its Search also has versatility where you can not only search for a given term find tweets from a user using “from:quotations”, find tweets to a user using “to:technama”, find tweets referencing a user: “@technama”, find tweets containing a hashtag: “#technology” and also find tweets with an attitude like :) or :p. This kind of search is no exception but having it in a free web app means something good!

You can access it here from your mobile or i would suggest it works even better than twitter on web: m.slandr.net

11. dabr.co.uk

Dabr is an open source mobile web interface to Twitter’s API similar to slandr.net. Loaded with all features, it makes your life easier if you have not installed any app and still use twitter. You can reply to any tweet, mark it as favorite, re-tweet it or send a direct message to tweeple of that tweet. You can see replies mentioning you, see DMs for you, make a search, browse favorite tweets, browse friends or followers and then follow/unfollow and block/unblock them.

Interestingly it also offers twitpicing your images from your media gallery. So thumbs up adding this feature.

12. m.twitter.com

Similar to its web version, the mobile is no good too. You can only send your updates or follow a user, open links, view replies where you have been mentioned with @.

###

I am sure there would be many more out there…if you’re using a different way to tweet from s60 then do write for us and our readers in the comments area. I will also make a comparative chart comparing all of above but i will do that after a break :P .

A side note is that you can follow technama on twitter as well: @technama which pulls all the latest blog posts. Apart from that my personal account on twitter is @rmansoo

Bing @Twitter: No, this is not similar to what we posted three days ago; Google @Twitter which was list of all Google official accounts at Twitter. This is a fusion of Twitter and Bing to bring for you a Search Engine that has neat concept.

BingTweet shows trending topics at Twitter in real time with categorization. So you have overall “Popular Now” trending topics aong with people, places and products trends. So you can check out if Obama’s tag is bustling with activity or Britney is being #hashed alot. On the left column, tweets are tickering with popular tab you selected. Then there is Bing+Twitter search field that displays Bing search results (as in the ressults you would have only searched on Bing) and the twitter search results for that keyword and this tweet result appears in left ticketing column.

All in all i liked the concept and how will google react to this? They were already counting how much share has bing fetched from their search pie when Bing has come up with this interesting search combination. Do give us your comments about BingTweet…mine is go BingTweet go! Here is a screenshot:
